Foreign Travellers/ Envoys who visited India

History is an important subject for UPSC CDS Exam. to crack the subject a student must have good command over History. It is divided into three sections– Ancient India, Medieval India, and Modern India.

Throughout history, India has been visited by many foreign travellers/envoys. They have helped us in a better understanding of history by providing us with written evidence of the art & culture, policies, caste system, economic wealth, religion, military might of that particular region. 

The UPSC makes questions on the authors of the books written by these famous travellers or in whose reign did they visit the country.

DEIMACHOS

He was a Greek of Seleucid Empire. Lived during 3rd century BC. Ambassador to the court of Bindusara (Second ruler of Mauryan ruler. Son of Chandragupta Maurya).

MEGASTHENESE

(302 -298 BC)

He was the ambassador of SELEUCUS, who visited India during the supremacy of CHANDRAGUPTA (Founder of Mauryan Empire).  He wrote the book ‘INDICA’. In his book, he mentioned Chandragupta as ‘SANDROCOTTUS’. The book talks about India.

FA HIEN

(405-411 AD)

He was a Chinese Buddhist monk. He visited India during the reign of Vikramaditya (Chandragupta II). Known for his visit of the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini. His travelogue “RECORDS OF BUDDHIST KINGDOM”.

HIUEN TSANG

(630-645 AD)

He was Chinese Buddhist monk. Visited India during supremacy of Harsha Vardhana. SI-YU-KI or ‘THE RECORDS OF WESTERN WORLD’ was written by him. He had been guest of Bhaskar Varman, ruler of Kamarupa. From their he was called to the court of Harshavardhan.

I-TSING

(671-695 AD)

He was a Chinese traveller. Visited India in connection with Buddhism. His work include biographies many important monks.

AL MASUDI

(957 AD)

He was Arab traveller. Has given account of India in his book ‘Muruj- ul-Zehab’

AL BERUNI (OR ABU REHMAN MAHAMUD)

(1024-1030)

He was a Persian scholar. He accompanied Mahmud of Ghazni and wrote book titled ‘Tahqiqi-e-Hind’. He was the first muslim scholar to study India. He is considered father of Indology.

MARCO POLO

(1292-1294 AD)

He was a European scholar. He visited Southern India during the reign of Rudramma Devi of Kakatiyas. His work “THE BOOK OF SIR MARCO POLO” gives an invaluable account of economic history of India.

IBN BATUTA

(1333-1347)

He was a Moroccan traveller. He visited India during reign of Mohammed Bin Tughlaq. ‘RIHLA’ is the book written by him

(1420-1421 AD)

He was a Italian merchant. He visited India during the reign of Devraya I of Sangam dynasty of Vijayanagar Empire

(1443-1444 AD)

He was a Persian scholar. He was also an ambassador of Persia. He visited during the reign of Dev Raya II of Vijaynagar empire.

He was a portuguese traveller. He has given brief description of government and people of Vijaynagar empire.

HAWKINS

(1608-1611 AD)

He was the ambassador of James I of England. Came in the reign of Jahangir.

THOMAS ROE

(1615-1619)

He was an English diplomat. Visited India during the reign of Jahangir. He came to seek protection for English factory at Surat. His “Journal of the Mission to the Mughal Empire” is treasured contribution to the history of India.

(1656-1717 AD)

He was French physician and scholar. Daneshmand Khan, a noble at Aurangzeb court was his patron.
