Explain 1 Unit of Electricity in India
By BYJU'S Exam Prep
Updated on: September 25th, 2023
1 unit of electricity in India is 3.6 x 106 J
In India, a unit of electricity is equal to one kWh.
The energy used by a power source of 1 kW for 1 hour is measured in units of kWh.
1kWh = 1000 Wh
On substituting the values we get
= 1000 x 60 x 60s
= 3.6 x 106 J

Current Electricity
The movement of electrons from one area of the circuit to another is referred to as current electricity.
Types
Following are the two categories of current electricity:
- Direct Current (DC): Direct current is a type of electricity in which the direction of the flow never changes. The steady flow of electrons from a location of high electron density to a region of low electron density is what defines direct current. In many home appliances and battery-powered applications, DC is used.
- Alternating current (AC) is a type of electricity that is bidirectional and constantly shifts the direction in which charges flow. A sinusoidally fluctuating voltage and current that reverse directions periodically and cause the current to oscillate back and forth is what gives rise to the bi-directionality. Our homes and places of business receive alternating current to power their electrical outlets.
Generation
The following techniques can be used to produce current electricity:
- Across the passage of a metal wire through a magnetic field (Both alternating current and direct current can be generated by the following method)
- utilizing a battery and chemical reactions (Direct current can be generated through this method)
