Epsom is the principal town of the Borough of Epson and Ewell, located in Surrey, England. The town is very close to the south of central London. It is closely associated with Horse racing. The first race is said to have been organized in the 17th century, under the reign of James I.

Why is Epsom (England) associated with horse racing?

Epsom as a town flourished due to its discovery of the ‘Epsom salt’ that is extracted from the bodies of mineral water found in the town. It became a ‘spa’ town, commercializing the success and popularity that came with the discovery.

Over time, Epson came to be associated with horse racing when the Epson Downs Racecourse started organizing horse races and called them ‘the Derby’. Derby is now synonymous with horse racing.

Horse racing is an equestrian sport where two or more horses compete, ridden by jockeys, over a set course. Sometimes they are not ridden by jockeys and are just made to run the distance by themselves. The sport finds its roots in classical antiquity. There are archaeological findings of horse racing found in the sites related to Ancient Greece, Babylon, Ancient Rome, Syria, and Egypt.
