Check the given statements below. Each of these statements contains a democratic and undemocratic element. Write out the two separately for each statement.
a) A minister said that some laws have to be passed by the parliament in order to conform to the regulations decided by the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
In the given statement, the democratic element is that the minister states that the parliament is to pass some laws. The undemocratic element is that the laws are to be passed to conform to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regulations. In a democratic setup, laws should only be passed for the needs and demands of the citizens and not conform to the demands of external agencies.
b) The Election Commission ordered re-polling in a constituency where large-scale rigging was reported.
Here, the democratic element is that when the rigging in the election is identified, the Election Commission orders a repolling. The undemocratic element is that there has been rigging of elections on a large scale. In such a case, the Election Commission of India (EC) holds power to reprimand the administration or Government. The EC also provides election guidelines to all political parties before the elections.
c) Women's representation in parliament has barely reached 10 percent. This led women's organizations to demand one-third of seats for women
The inadequate representation of women candidates in parliament is undemocratic. Ideally, there should be equal representation of women in the government. However, in the scenario, women demanding one-third representation is a democratic act.
