Arbitration & Mediation

The demand for dispute resolution professionals is high. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of arbitrators, mediators and conciliators will grow 8% from 2019 to 2029. Getting a master's degree in dispute resolution can help you move into the field if you currently work in a different industry. They prepare statements and make arguments for their clients. In some cases, arbitrators work on a panel with other dispute resolution professionals to help decide cases.

Arbitrators listen to disputes and make decisions based on the evidence presented by the parties at the hearing. They frequently have legal backgrounds but prefer to operate in more informal settings, such as boardrooms. Arbitrators, like attorneys, prepare statements and make arguments on behalf of their clients. Arbitrators may be part of a panel with other conflict resolution specialists in some instances.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), about 7,000 arbitrator, mediator, and conciliator jobs were available in the United States in 2019. By 2029, more than 600 new jobs are predicted to be created in these industries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median compensation for arbitrators, mediators, and conciliators was $66,130 per year in 2020.

Interpersonal and negotiating skills are used by mediators to assist disputing parties in reaching an agreement. If mediation fails to provide a resolution, the parties may have to go to court. Mediators, unlike arbitrators, cannot make binding rulings. Their role is to foster debate between opposing parties by assisting them in reaching their own conclusions. The pay for mediators varies depending on the industry. For example, the typical annual pay for people working in state government (excluding education and hospitals) was $67,070.
