Difference Between TISSNET and TISS-MAT/PAT

TISSNET and TISSMAT are both entrance exams. The candidates who want to apply for MA (HRM&LR) and/or MA (ODCL) programmes are required to appear for both TISSNET and TISSMAT. The TISSMAT is conducted immediately after the TISSNET exam. Candidates who have appeared for TISSNET are only eligible for TISSMAT. 


Under TISS, four campuses are affiliated: TISS Tuljapur, TISS Hyderabad, TISS Guwahati and TISS Mumbai. All these campuses conduct TISSNET and TISSMAT/TISSPAT exams for selecting aspirants who wish to create their career in business management.


What is TISSNET?

TISS National Entrance Test (TISSNET) is a National level entrance exam conducted by TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) for the candidates who aspire to get admission into the MA Programmes at TISS. TISS offers 50 Master's Degree programmes from its Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati, and Hyderabad campuses for the 2022-24 batch. The candidates can apply for a maximum of three programmes across any of the two campuses indicating the order of preference. The merit list will be prepared based on the preferences given by the candidate in the application form.

The TISSNET exam is held online and the paper comprises three sections: English Proficiency, Mathematics and Logical Reasoning and General Awareness.

There are a total of 100 questions and for each correct answer, the candidate is awarded with one mark. There is NO negative marking in the TISSNET exam. A short view of the TISSNET exam pattern is shown below:

What is TISSMAT?

TISS Management Aptitude Test (TISSMAT) is a National level entrance exam conducted for the candidates who want to apply for MA (HRM&LR) and / or MA (ODCL) programmes. Candidates who appear for TISSNET are only eligible for TISSMAT.

TISSMAT is a computer-based exam with a duration of 45 minutes. The paper has MCQs type questions from three sections: Comprehension, Business Awareness and Data Interpretation. There are around 35 questions and for each correct question, one mark is rewarded and for each wrong, 0.25 marks is deducted. There is also a descriptive test of about 15 marks.   • Only for MA in Human Resource Management & Labour Relations (HRM &LR) and/or MA in Organisation Development, Change and Leadership (ODCL) courses.

TISSNET vs TISSMAT: Selection Criteria and Weightage

  • The candidates have to first qualify the TISSNET exam before appearing for TISS MAT

  • The shortlisted candidates will have to appear for the TISSMAT exam or Pre-Interview test along with the Personal Interview round for the final selection
  • All MBA aspirants have to appear for TISSNET irrespective of the programme they have applied for. On the other hand, TISS MAT exam is mandatory only for those candidates who have applied for MA in Human Resource Management (MA-HRM) & Labour Relations (MA-LR) and/or MA in Organisation Development, Change and Leadership (ODCL) programmes
  • TISSNET exam’ main focus is to check students’ general awareness, logical and mathematical skills while TISSMAT evaluates the business aptitude skills of the student and the ability to interpret data related to marketing
  • The final selection in TISS campus will be based on the following criteria and weightage:
    • TISSNET: 40%
    • Online Personal Interview (OPI): 30%

TISSNET Eligibility

  • Applying candidate must be a graduate or have an equivalent degree from a recognised university 
  • Candidates who are in the final year of their graduation are also eligible to apply
  • Candidates who are pursuing a four-year bachelor's degree (like B.Tech) must have cleared all subjects up to the sixth semester
  • There is NO UPPER/LOWER AGE LIMIT for appearing in TISSNET 2021
  • Candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of working experience

  • On the scorecard of TISSNET, it is clearly mentioned whether the student is eligible to appear for the TISSMAT/TISSPAT or not
  • This is written only when the candidate clears the cut-off.

  • Candidates who have scored above cut-off in TISSNET are eligible to appear for TISSMAT or TISSPAT.

  • TISSNET is the 1st stage of test which is basically conducted to screen candidates. Once the candidate scores above the cut-off in TISSNET, those candidates are eligible to appear for TISSMAT or TISSPAT (the 2nd round of selection procedure). After one has appeared in TISSMAT/TISSPAT, candidates are required to appear for Online Personal Interview (OPI).

    All the scores are then normalized and calculated according to weightage of each round and then only the final selection of candidate is done.
