Difference Between OLTP and OLAP in DBMS: DBMS uses various processing systems where OLTP and OLAP are one of the processing systems used in DBMS. Both the systems are used to perform specific tasks. The major difference between OLAP and OLTP is that in OLTP the transaction is based on the data from the parent source whereas OLAP uses the data from OLTP, using it as the source for data. Check OLAP vs OLTP.

Here, we will first see what is OLTP and OLAP in DBMS thereafter we will explore the difference between OLTP and OLAP in DBMS in detail based on the various factors such as data source, uses, queries, speed of processing, and a lot more.

Difference Between OLTP and OLAP in DBMS

The database management system uses OLTP and OLAP for data processing. Let us now see the difference between OLAP and OLTP in the table provided below:

Key Differences between OLTP and OLAP in DBMS

OLTP OLAP
This is an Online Transactional Processing system. This is an Online Analytical Processing system.
Uses original data from the parent source. Uses data from OLTP sources.
Standard queries are used in this. Queries that are complex can be accessed.
The speed of the processing is quick. The speed of the processing is slow as compared to the OLTP.
Backups are taken frequently. Backups are not taken frequently.
Uses DBMS for processing. The data warehouse is used.
This process is market-oriented. This process is subject-oriented.

What is OLTP in DBMS?

OLTP in DBMS stands for Online Transactional Processing. The online transaction in the DBMS is processed using OLTP. Short transactions of a large number are processed by this. OLTP systems can be seen in various places such as ATMs, hotel reservation portals, etc.

OLTP system can easily process a huge number of transactions while maintaining data integrity. Access to the multi-user is also possible with OLTP. The OLTP systems can be accessed and are available 24*7*365 which is an essential benefit of this system. Candidates can also check Cardinality and entity set in DBMS.

What is OLAP in DBMS?

OLAP in DBMS stands for Online Analytical Processing. With the help of OLAP, high-speed analysis of multi-dimensional data can be done. The data mining can easily be done by the OLAP system. It is efficient in various places such as budgeting, financial analysis, sales forecasting, and a lot more.

The data used by the OLAP is provided from the data warehouse. Historical data can also be managed by the OLAP. The transactional data is not changed by the OLAP and primarily does data analysis rather than processing. Keys and acid properties in DBMS can also be referred to from here.
