Republic

The term 'Republic' derives from the Latin term Res Publica. It means "matter of the public." A Republic is a state in which people choose their representatives. The people of the area elect a president.

The republic is linked not just to democracies but also to oligarchies, monarchies, and aristocracies, where the heads of state are chosen randomly from the population. While an executive is also appointed to carry out the laws passed by the representatives, representatives are elected to make legislation.
