(i) Hypertonic solution

  1. If the surrounding solution consists of a higher solute concentration when compared to the inside of the cell, then it is known as a hypertonic solution.
  2. If the surrounding solution consists of a low solvent concentration when compared to the inside of the cell, then it is known as a hypertonic solution.
  3. The solvent moves from the cell to the outside in this condition.

(ii) Hypotonic solution

  1. If the surrounding solution consists of a lower solute concentration when compared to the solute concentration inside of the cell, then it is known as a hypotonic solution.
  2. If the surrounding solutions consist of a high solvent concentration when compared to the inside of the cell, then it is known as a hypotonic solution.
  3. The solvent moves from the surrounding toward the cell.

(iii) Isotonic solution

  1. Isotonic solution is a solution that has the same concentration of solute in both the surrounding solution and the solution present inside the cell.
  2. The solution has the same concentration of solvent in both the surrounding solution and the solution present inside the cell.
  3. No movement of solvent as there is an equilibrium between the surrounding solution and the solution inside the cell.
