The Development Co-operative Bank Ltd was formed in 1981 when Ismailia Co-operative Bank Ltd and Masalawala Co-operative Bank Ltd merged. Later, Citi Cooperative Bank Ltd also amalgamated with Development Co-operative Bank Ltd. The Development Co-operative Bank Ltd was renamed Development Credit Bank Ltd in 1995.

Since its inception in the 1930s, DCB Bank has had a strong presence in India. The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) and Platinum Jubilee Investments Ltd., the company's promoter and promoter group, own less than 15% of the company. In May 2009, Mr Murali M. Natrajan was named the MD and CEO of DCB Bank. Earlier, Natrajan worked for foreign banks such as Standard Chartered and Citibank before joining DCB. 

The role had been vacant since the former MD and CEO Gautam Vir had resigned, in January 2009. Natrajan was formerly the bank's Head of Consumer Banking for India and Nepal, and he took over at a time when the bank's retail division was beset with stressed assets that were eroding profitability.
