Cooperation Minister Amit Shah launched the Dairy Sahakar Scheme to commemorate the Diamond jubilee celebration of the dairy giant. The aim was to boost Agriculture and its allied sectors in India. In October 2021, Amul celebrated its 75th Foundation Year at Anand in Gujarat.

Dairy Sahakar Scheme – Overview

Dairy Sahakar is the first-ever comprehensive scheme launched exclusively for the dairy sector in India. It is framed by the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) and the Ministry of Cooperation.

  • NCDC extended financial aid of Rs 5000 crore to qualified cooperatives for the scheme’s vision – ‘from cooperative to prosperity.’
  • The Dairy Sahakar Scheme is known to merge with various other Government schemes of the state governments, development agencies, UT administration, and those of further bilateral, multilateral assistance.

The scheme will also supplement the efforts of various similar projects executed by the DAHD to strengthen the development of India’s animal husbandry and dairy sectors.

Objectives of Dairy Sahakar Scheme

The overall objective of the scheme is to raise the income of Indian farmers and make India’s agricultural and allied sectors Atmanirbhar self-reliant. Some of the other activities that recognize the vision of the Dairy Sahakar Scheme are

  • Purchasing, rearing, and breeding milk animals
  • Bovine development
  • Dairy development projects for milk production, processing, and quality assurance
  • Branding and trademarking, packaging, commerce, transport, and storehouse of milk and products of milk
  • Export of dairy products
  • Purchase of equipment and transport vehicles
  • Establishment and expansion of chilling plants and milk collection centers
  • Development of small deed mixing laboratories and manufacturing units
  • Establishment of fodder development programs and resources for mobile veterinary care and artificial insemination.

Amul’s 75th Year Celebration

On Sunday, 31 October 2021, Amul Dairy celebrated its 75th anniversary. The occasion marked the success of cooperative sectors in India. In his speech, union minister Amit shah launches the dairy Sahakar scheme and is the Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation.

  • He highlighted the potential of India’s cooperative sectors to strengthen India’s economy into becoming a USD 5-trillion economy and make the country Atmanirbhar.
  • The occasion also earmarked the launch of the Dairy Sahakar Scheme, a dairy-focused comprehensive framework that could leverage other schemes of the Union Government. Several ministers graced the event with their presence.
  • Amul was founded in 1946 and is the carrier of the white revolution in India.
  • It is a collaboration possessed by over 35 lakh milk producers that began in Gujarat.

The Indian Context of Dairy Sahakar Scheme PIB

India is the world’s largest milk producer. In 2019-20, India produced 198.40 million tons of milk with a per capita availability of about 406 gm/day. As of March 2020, India has 1,94,195 dairy cooperatives.

  • NCDC is an autonomous institution of apex level statutory of the Government of India.
  • It was founded under an Act of Parliament in 1963. NCDC falls under the administrative control of the Ministry of Cooperation, Government of India.
  • It does not get any budgetary support from the Government and operates on open market principles.
  • Through its SAHAKAR-22 framework, NCDC plays a crucial role in ‘Doubling the Farmers’ Income.’
