152 SAKSHAM Centres launched

Why in News

  • As part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a total of 152 Centre for Financial Literacy & Service Delivery (SAKSHAM Centres) across 77 districts of 13 states launched under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) of the Ministry of Rural Development.

Key Points

About SAKSHAM Centres:

  • Centre for Financial Literacy & Service Delivery (CFL&SD) would act as a one-stop solution/single window system for the basic financial needs of Self-Help Group (SHG) households in rural areas.
  • The main objective of the centre is to provide financial literacy & facilitate the delivery of financial services (savings, credit, insurance, pensions etc.) to SHG members and the rural poor.
  • These Centers will be managed by the SHG network, largely at the level of the Cluster Level Federations (CLFs), with the help of trained Community Resource Persons (CRPs).

SAKSHAM App:

  • The app will help the community resource person to know the penetration of various financial services for each SHG & village.

About Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission:

  • It is a centrally sponsored programme, launched by the Ministry of Rural Development in June 2011.

  • Start-Up Village Entrepreneurship Programme
  • Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana
  • Mahila Kisan Shashaktikaran Pariyojana
  • Rural Self Employment Institutes
  • Deendayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana

G7 Digital Trade Principles

Why in News

  • The Group of Seven (G7) nations agreed on Digital Trade Principles to govern cross-border data use and digital trade.
  • G7 Digital Trade Principles were adopted by the Trade Ministers of G7 members at a meeting in London, Britain.

Key Points

  • The deal agreed is a first step in reducing those barriers, and could lead to a common rulebook of digital trade.
  • Digital trade is broadly defined as trade in goods and services that is either enabled or delivered digitally, encompassing activities from the distribution of films and TV to professional services.
  • The deal sets out a middle ground between highly regulated data protection regimes used in European countries and the more open approach of the United States.

Pakistan to remain on Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Grey List

Why in News

  • Global terror financing watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF) retained Pakistan on its 'Grey List' of countries.
  • Three new countries -Turkey, Jordan, and Mali -have also been added to the Grey List.

Key Points

  • Pakistan is cooperating and only four action items remain to be completed.
  • The FATF asked Islamabad to investigate and prosecute UN-designated terrorists including Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar.
  • Pakistan was placed on the Grey List by the FATF in June 2018. Since then, Pakistan continues to be in the list due to its failure to comply with the FATF mandates.

Facts about Financial Action Task Force (FATF):

  • FATF is an intergovernmental organisation founded on the initiative of the G7 to develop policies to combat money laundering. In 2001, its mandate was expanded to include terrorism financing.
  • Headquarters: Paris, France
  • Founded: 1989
  • Membership: 39

Two lists of FATF:

  • Grey List: Those countries that are considered safe haven for supporting terror funding and money laundering. ‘Increased monitoring list’ is another name for the 'Grey List'.
  • Black List: Those countries known as Non-Cooperative Countries are put in the Black List. These countries support money laundering and terror funding activities.

‘ABHYAS’ - the High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT)

  • ‘ABHYAS’ - the High-speed Expendable Aerial Target (HEAT) was successfully flight-tested by DRDO from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Bay of Bengal in Odisha.

Key Points

  • ‘ABHYAS’ is designed & developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru.
  • The vehicle can be used as an aerial target for the evaluation of various missile systems.
  • The performance of the target aircraft was monitored through telemetry and various tracking sensors including Radars and Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS).
  • This indigenous target aircraft, once developed, will meet the requirements of High-speed Expendable Aerial Targets (HEAT) for the Indian Armed Forces.

Web-Based Project Monitoring Portal (WBPMP) for Military Engineer Services

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Web Based Project Monitoring Portal (WBPMP) for Military Engineer Services (MES).

Key Points

  • The portal conceptualized in accordance with the Digital India Mission of the Union Government has been developed by Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-G).
  • The portal is the first project management e-Governance to be implemented by the MES.
  • It will enable real time monitoring of projects from its inception to completion.

Other e-Governance applications:

  • MES is also in process of implementing 9 other e-Governance applications.
  • These include Product Approval Portal, AWMP Scrutiny & Status Application, E-Measurement Book, Budget Management Portal, Work Estimation Application, Billing and Construction Account Management, Cashbook Management and Accounting System, Contractor and Consultant Enlistment Portal & E-Deviation.

India hands over Jaynagar-Kurtha cross-border rail link to Nepal

  • India handed over the 34.9 km long cross-border rail link connecting Jayanagar in Bihar to Kurtha in Nepal to the Nepal government.

Key Points

  • The executing agency for the project, IRCON International Ltd. handed over the assets of the railway section to Nepal Railway Company Ltd.
  • The Jaynagar - Kurtha section is part of the 68.7 km Jaynagar - Bijalpura- Bardidas rail link built under the Government of India's grant assistance programme.

Micro snail species ‘Georissa mawsmaiensis’ discovered in Meghalaya’s Mawsmai cave

  • A micro snail species namedGeorissa mawsmaiensis’ has recently been discovered from Mawsmai, a limestone cave in Meghalaya, 170 years after the last such discovery was made. 

Key Points

  • Five species of cave-dwelling snails have been reported from the caves of Meghalaya.
  • The discovery this time has been reported in the Journal of Conchology.
  • The researchers involved in the discovery are Nipu Kumar Das and NA Aravind of the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru.

Note: It was in 1851 that Georissa saritta, a member of the same genus as the latest find, was collected and described from the Musmai (Mawsmai today) valley near Cherrapunjee by WH Benson.

  • The 52nd edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will be held from 20th to 28th November, 2021 in Goa.

  • Istvan Szabois one of the most critically acclaimed Hungarian film directors of the past few decades known for masterpieces like Mephisto (1981) Father (1966).
  • Martin Scorsese is one of the major figures of the New Hollywood era, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential directors in film history.

Donald Trump to launch a new social network 'TRUTH Social'

  • Former US president Donald Trump has announced plans to launch his own social network 'TRUTH Social'.

Key Points

  • ‘TRUTH Social’ will be owned by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), and is expected to begin its beta launch for "invited guests" next month.

Note: Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms banned Trump from their services after hundreds of his supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

  • In this book, Gulzar has shared many interesting unknown facts about legends like Kishore Kumar, Ritwik Ghatak, Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Mahasweta Devi, among others.
  • The memoir is published by the publishing group Penguin Random House India.

About the Author:

  • Gulzar, one of India's leading poets, is a greatly respected scriptwriter and film director.
  • He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2014.
