BRICS Business Forum 2022

Why in News:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi Virtually participated in the meeting of the BRICS Business Forum organized in Beijing, the capital of China.

key points:

  • BRICS is an acronym for a grouping of the world's leading emerging economies – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
  • The innovative idea of ​​three mantras - "Reform, Perform and Transform" - was introduced by the Prime Minister at the BRICS Business Forum 2022 held in China to deal with the economic problems arising out of the pandemic.
  • The 14th BRICS summit this year assumes significance as it has been held at the time of the Russo-Ukraine war and the US imposing harsh economic sanctions against Russia, a member of BRICS.
  • Currently, the BRICS organization includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, although the new development bank of BRICS has expanded its scope to include the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Uruguay, and Egypt.

  • The Reuters Institute Digital News Report, commissioned by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, is an annual study that tracks how news is consumed in different countries.
  • This year's Reuters Institute Digital News Report, Eleventh, is based on a survey conducted by British market research and data analytics firm YouGuv.
  • This year's report identified six key trends that could have wide-ranging socio-political implications.
    1. According to the report, people are trusting news content the least, with the average level of trust in the news at 42%, which is lower than the previous year.
    2. According to the survey, there has been an average decline in the use of traditional news media in almost all countries.
    3. The proportion of news consumers according to the report has been overworked, with the report describing the phenomenon as "selective avoidance".
    4. Despite a small increase in the proportion of people willing to pay for online news (mostly in wealthy countries), the level of growth in digital subscriptions to news content has decreased.
    5. The "smartphone has become the dominant way most people read the news first thing in the morning", replacing the traditional newspaper.
    6. According to the survey, there has been an increase in the number of people reading news through social media platforms like Facebook and Tiktok instead of traditional media.

  • The “Gender Responsive Governance” Workshop is organized by the National Commission for Women (NCW) under its pan-India capacity-building program 'She is a Changemaker' project.
  • The She is a Changemaker project organized by the National Commission for Women aims to improve the leadership skills of women representatives.
  • Under the 'She is a Changemaker' project, capacity-building programs for women representatives have been organized by the Commission in collaboration with sector-wise training institutes, aimed at improving their decision-making ability, communication skills, effective management, etc.
  • Under this project, 49 training batches have been organized by the Commission in eight states so far, under which about 1700 women representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions/Urban Local Bodies have been trained so far.

  • The new campus of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry 'Vanijya Bhawan' is inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.

  • During the event, a new portal - NIRYAT (National Import-Export Annual Trade Analysis Record) was also launched by the Prime Minister.
  • The NIRYAT Portal has been developed as a one-stop platform for the stakeholders to get all the necessary information related to India's foreign trade.
  • Constructed near the India Gate, Vanijya Bhawan has been designed as a smart building, incorporating the principle of sustainable architecture with a special focus on saving energy.
  • The new Vanijya Bhawan will function as an integrated and modern office complex, which will be used by two departments, the Department of Commerce and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, under the Ministry.

  • With a vision to promote sustainable trade and create market linkages, a mega buyer-seller meet was organized in Guwahati under the One District One Product Initiative of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Affairs (DPIIT).

  • The event has been organized in association with the Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region and Northeast Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC) and Northeastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC).
  • More than 70 vendors, traders, farmers, and aggregators from different districts of the northeastern states-Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim- showcased their products at the conference held in Guwahati.
  • The One District One Product initiative organized by DPIIT aims to increase the income of farmers in a sustainable manner.

The unemployment rate in India

  • According to the Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS) for the year 2020-21 released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programs, India has registered a decrease of 0.6% in the unemployment rate during the year 2020-21.

  • As per the survey, the unemployment rate has been recorded at 3.3% in rural areas and 6.7% in urban areas.
  • According to the report, the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) in the year 2020-21, the percentage of persons in the labor force in the population was 41.6% as against 40.1% in the previous year.
  • In the periodic labor force survey released under the Ministry of Statistics and Programs, the worker population ratio is defined as the percentage of employed persons in the population.
  • The survey defines migrants as a member of a family whose last common place of residence was, at any time in the past, different from the current place of enumeration.

BRO Cafe

  • The Ministry of Defense has approved the setting up of roadside facilities at 75 locations along the border roads of Border Roads Organization (BRO) in 12 States/Union Territories.

  • The purpose of BRO Cafe is to provide basic facilities to the tourists as well as to accelerate economic activities in the border areas.
  • BRO Cafe has been constituted with the objective of meeting the strategic needs of the border areas as well as working towards socio-economic advancement in the northern and eastern borders.
  • The facilities provided under BRO Cafe include two-wheeler and four-wheeler parking, a food plaza/restaurant, separate toilet facilities for women, men, and differently abled, and a first-aid facility/MI room, etc.
  • Under this scheme, roadside facilities will be developed and operated in a public-private partnership with agencies, the period of agreement with the agencies will be 15 years and can be extended for a period of five years.

Under-17 Asian Championship

  • In the Under-17 Asian Championship, Ritika won gold in the 43 kg category, Ahilya Shinde gold in the 49 kg category, Shiksha in the 57 kg category, gold by Priya in the 73 kg category while Pulkit won silver in the 65 kg category.
