First International Migration Review Forum

  • India's Minister of State for External Affairs Shri V. Muraleedharan will lead the Indian delegation to the first International Migration Review Forum to be held under the aegis of the General Assembly at the United Nations in New York from May 17 to 20.

key points:

  • The first International Migration Review Forum will consist of four interactive multi-stakeholders round tables, policy dialogue and a plenary.
  • The International Migration Review Forum will serve as the primary intergovernmental global forum to review progress made at local, national, regional and global levels in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM).
  • In General Assembly Resolution A/RES/73/195, UN member states agreed to review progress made at local, national, regional and global levels in implementing the GCM within the framework of the United Nations.

Jamaica Visit by Indian President

Indian President Ram Nath Kovind is on a state visit to two Caribbean countries, Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Key Point:

  • The President, who is on a historic visit to Jamaica, will inaugurate a road in the name of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and a garden dedicated to Indo-Jamaican friendship during the Indian President's visit to Jamaica.
  • Ram Nath Kovind is the first President of India to visit Jamaica.
  • About 70,000 Indian migrants, whose ancestors came from India (mainly residents of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar) as indentured laborers between 1845–1917, make up about 3% of Jamaica's population.
  • Jamaica is an island country located in the Caribbean Sea. It is the third largest island in the Greater Antilles and the Caribbean, after Cuba and Hispaniola.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, led the Vaishakh Buddha Purnima celebrations at Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the "foundation" ceremony for the construction of the India International Center for Buddhist Culture and Heritage in Lumbini and addressed a large gathering of Buddhist monks.
  • During Vaishakh Buddha Purnima, the Ministry of Culture in association with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) organizes a colorful program for Vaishakh Buddha Purnima Day celebrations in New Delhi.
  • India and Nepal signed six agreements following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba during his visit to Lumbini.

Participants from the Sailing and Windsurfing teams of the Indian Navy have brought laurels to the Indian Navy by winning two Gold, one Silver and two bronze medals at the YAI Multiclass Sailing Championship (IN-MDL Cup 2022).

  • YAI Multiclass Sailing Championship organized from 08 to 15 May 22 at Indian Naval Water Skills Training Center (INWTC) Mumbai under the aegis of Sailing Association of India (YAI) and Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA) for Senior Olympic Classes of Yachts had gone.
  • The YAI Multiclass Sailing Championship was organized by M/s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and was a YAI ranking event as well as a selection test for the Asian Games.
  • Vice Admiral K Swaminathan, AVSM, PVSM, Chief of Staff, HQWNC, INWTC (Mumbai) attended the Valedictory Ceremony held on 15 May 2022 as the Chief Guest.

  • Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary has been notified as the 52nd Tiger Reserve of India.

key points:

  • Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary is the fourth tiger reserve of Rajasthan after Ranthambore, Sariska and Mukundra.
  • The newly notified Tiger Reserve includes the tiger habitat between Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in the northeast and Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve on the southern side.
  • According to the "Status of Tigers in India" report released in 2019, there are a total of 2,967 tigers in 20 states of India.

  • The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Act was amended by an ordinance with effect from 24 January 2000.
  • Through an amendment in the year 2000, a Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) was set up to handle the judicial and dispute functions from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Inauguration of facilities in ancient Kanheri caves

  • The Union Minister for Tourism, Culture and Donors Shri Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated the facilities at the ancient Kanheri Caves on the occasion of Buddha Purnima.

Key Point:

  • The Kanheri Caves are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a large basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the former island of Salsette.
  • The Kanheri Caves are one of the largest single excavations in the country, consisting of more than 110 different rock-cut monolithic excavations.
  • The excavations in the Kanheri caves were mainly carried out during the Hinayana phase of Buddhism.
  • The name Kanheri is derived from 'Kanhagiri' in Prakrit and is found in the Nasik inscription of the Satavahana ruler Vasisthaputra Pulumavi.
  • The earliest reference to the Kanheri caves was given by a foreign philosopher named Fa-Hen, who came to India during 399–411 CE.

  • Amendment was introduced by the President on 15th May through which Sikkim was finally included in the Union of India as the 22nd state of the country on 16th May 1975.
  • After the inclusion of Sikkim as a Union State of India, Dorji was made the Chief Minister of Sikkim and the monarchy was abolished.
  • Sikkim is the first state in the country to become 100% organic.
