UNESCO launches 2021 State of the Education Report for India: ‘No Teacher, No Class’

Why in News

  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched its 2021 State of the Education Report (SOER) for India: No Teacher, No Class’.

Key Points

  • The report aims to serve as a reference for enhancing the implementation of the NEP and towards the realization of the SDG.4 target 4c on teachers.

Findings of the Report:

  • Around 1.1 lakh schools in India are single-teacher entities.
  • A total of 19%, or 11.16 lakh teaching positions in schools, lie vacant in the country.
  • Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest teacher vacancies.
  • Moreover, over 60 percent of vacancies in India are in rural areas, with Uttar Pradesh topping the list at 80 percent.
  • Madhya Pradesh has 21,000 single-teacher schools, the highest in the country.
  • Tripura has the least number of women teachers, followed by Assam and Jharkhand. Chandigarh leads the chart followed by Goa and Delhi.
  • Access to the internet in schools is 19% all over India - only 14% in rural areas compared to 42% in urban areas.

PM MITRA Parks

  • The Central Government has approved the setting up of 7 Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks with a total outlay of Rs. 4,445 crore in a period of 5 years.

Key Points

About PM MITRA Park:

  • PM MITRA Park will be developed by a Special Purpose Vehicle which will be owned by the State Government and Government of India in a Public Private Partnership (PPP) Mode.
  • PM MITRA Park will be set up at Greenfield / Brownfield sites located in different willing States.
  • PM MITRA is inspired by the 5F vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi -Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign.

Funding:

  • Maximum Development Capital Support (DCS) of ₹ 500 crore to all Greenfield PM MITRA and a maximum of ₹ 200 Crore to Brownfield PM MITRA will be provided for development of Common Infrastructure and ₹ 300 Crore of Competitiveness Incentive Support (CIS) will also be provided to each PM MITRA park for early establishment of textiles manufacturing units in PM MITRA.

New Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh

  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approved the Chhattisgarh government’s proposal to declare the combined areas of the Guru Ghasidas National Park and Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve.
  • The new Reserve is located in the northern part of the state, bordering Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.
  • This will be the fourth Tiger Reserve in Chhattisgarh, after the Udanti-Sitanadi, Achanakmar, and Indravati Reserves.
  • It will be the 53rd of the country’s Tiger Reserve.

Key Points

  • The proposal was considered by the 11th Technical Committee of the NTCA on September 1, and approval was granted a month later under Section 38V (1) of The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • The Tamor Pingla Wildlife Sanctuary was identified as part of the Sarguja Jashpur Elephant Reserve in 2011.
  • The Guru Ghasidas National Park used to be part of the Sanjay National Park in undivided Madhya Pradesh.
  • Guru Ghasidas National Park is in Koriya district; Tamor Pingla is in Surajpur district in the northwestern corner of Chhattisgarh.

 New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical lift Railway Sea Bridge

  • The new Pamban Bridge in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, is the country's first vertical lift Railway Sea Bridge, which is expected to be ready for use by March 2022.

Key Points

  • The New Pamban Bridge is being developed by Railway Vikas Nigam Limited.
  • The new bridge, which would be 2.07 kilometres long, will be a boon for devotees and pilgrims who wish to embark on a spiritual tour to Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu.
  • The existing Pamban Bridge was India's first sea bridge and became operational in 1914.

 Varanasi to become first Indian city to start ropeway service in public transportation

  • Varanasi will soon become the first Indian city to use ropeway services in public transportation.

Key Points

  • The world’s third and India’s first public transport ropeway is proposed to be constructed from Cantt Railway Station (Varanasi Junction) to Church Square (Godauliya) to ease the traffic congestion.
  • The commencement of this ropeway will give easy access to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat.

  • AirAsia India claimed that it has become the first Airbus operator in the world to start Taxibot services with passengers on board.

  • Taxibot significantly reduces aircraft fuel usage, emissions and noise levels at airports, and the risk of foreign object and jet blast damage, and operates with a hybrid-electric engine.
  • GMR-run Delhi Airport was the first aviation facility in the world to introduce Taxibot operations way back in 2019.
  • AirAsia India has partnered with KSU Aviation, the exclusive operator of the Taxibot in India.

  • Ressa is the co-founder and CEO of Rappler, an independent news website based in the Philippines. 
  • Muratov is the editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta.

Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah wins 2021 Nobel Prize for Literature

  • Tanzanian Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah has won the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugees in the gulf between cultures and continents.
  • Abdulrazak Gurnah was born in 1948 and grew up on the island of Zanzibar in Tanzania in the Indian Ocean but reached England as a refugee at the end of the 1960’s.
  • Gurnah has published ten novels, including Paradise and Desertion and a number of short stories.

Key Points

  • The theme of World Mental Health Day 2021 is 'Mental Health in an Unequal World.'
  • It was first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization.

Note:

  • The World Health Organisation states globally, around 280 million people suffer from depression, whereas around 1 in 5 of the world’s children and adolescents have a mental disorder.
  • As far as India is concerned, according to the ‘The Global Burden of Disease Study 1990 – 2017’ study, 197.3 million people were suffering from various mental disorders in India that is one in seven Indians.
