PM POSHAN Scheme

Why in News

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the PM Poshan Shakti Nirman or PM POSHAN scheme for providing one hot cooked meal in Government and Government-aided schools.
  • It has been launched for an initial period of five years (2021-22 to 2025-26).

Key Points

  • The earlier name of the scheme was National Scheme for Mid Day Meal in Schools (Mid Day Meal Scheme).
  • It is a Centrally-Sponsored Scheme which covers all school children studying in Classes I-VIII of Government, Government-Aided Schools.
  • The scheme covers about 80 crore children studying in 11.20  lakh schools across the country.
  • The scheme is proposed to be extended to students studying in pre-primary or Bal Vatikas in addition to all the 11.80 crore children from elementary classes.
  • The concept of TithiBhojan will be encouraged extensively.
  • TithiBhojan is a community participation programme in which people provide special food to children on special occasions/festivals.
  • Government is promoting the development of School Nutrition Gardens in schools to give children firsthand experience with nature and gardening.

Fund: The Central government will bear Rs 54,061 crore of the total estimated cost of Rs 1.3 lakh crore, with the state government paying Rs 31,733 crore (Rs 45,000 crore will be released by the Central government as subsidies for food grains).

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated 35 crop varieties with special traits to the Nation.
  • He dedicated to the nation the newly constructed campus of the National Institute of Biotic Stress Management, Raipur
  • He distributed the Green Campus Award to Agricultural Universities.

Key Points

  • The crop varieties with special traits have been developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to address the twin challenges of climate change and malnutrition.
  • 35 such crop varieties with special traits like climate resilience and higher nutrient content have been developed in the year 2021.

Swachh Survekshan 2022

Why in News

  • Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched the Swachh Survekshan 2022.
  • It is the 7th consecutive edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS), conducted by Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U).
  • Continuing with its theme of ‘People First’, SBM-U will organize a series of citizen centric activities under the overarching theme of ‘Jan Bhagidari’.

Key Points

  • The survey will give priority to the voices of senior citizens and young adults alike and reinforce their participation towards upholding the cleanliness of urban India.
  • Introduced by MoHUA in 2016 to rank cities on cleanliness parameters in 73 cities, Swachh Survekshan has become the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey covering over 4,000 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
  • This year’s Survekshan is committed to creating a level playing field for smaller cities by introducing two population categories under 15K and between 15-25K.
  • To further expand the Survekshan footprint, district rankings have been introduced for the first time.
  • The scope of the survey has been expanded to now cover 100% wards for sampling, as compared to 40% in previous years. 

Note: Along with SS 2022, MoHUA also flagged off the field assessments for the Safaimitra Suraksha Challenge launched a year ago.

Convergence scheme to support Micro Food Processing Units of Urban SHGs

Why in News

  • The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched a Convergence scheme between PM Formalisation of Micro-food processing Enterprises (PMFME) & Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) scheme.
  • It will support Micro Food Processing Units of Urban SHGs (Self Help Groups).

Key Points

  • The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) launched the PMFME scheme as a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyanto enhance competitiveness of individual micro-enterprises in the unorganized segment & promote formalization of this sector.
  • MoHUA is implementing a flagship Scheme named DAY-NULM, which has mobilised over 61 lakhs urban poor women into SHGs and their federations.
  • Both the Schemes have been converged to benefit members from these SHGs.

Note: DAY-NULM has already signed MoUs with Amazon and Flipkart for sale of ‘SonChiraiya’ products made by SHGs on market place and making efforts for helping their business and showcase their products.

  • Ministry of Tourism, Government of India launched NIDHI 2.0 (National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry) and “India Tourism Statistics: At a Glance, 2021.

Key Points

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Tourism, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI) to actively promote and support ‘sustainability initiatives’ in the tourism sector of each other.

About NIDHI (National Integrated Database of Hospitality Industry):

  • NIDHI was launched by the Ministry of Tourism to facilitate the digitalization of the tourism sector.
  • Registration with NIDHI ensures electronic delivery of various services and benefits to the hospitality unit.

  • The prize comprises a citation, a plaque, and a cash award of ₹5 lakh.

  • Professor Eric A. Hanushek was selected as the recipient of the 2021 Yidan Prize for Education Research.
