 Sipri report on Global military spending

Why in news: According to the SIPRI report, total global military expenditure increased by 3.7 percent in real terms in 2022 to reach a new high of $ 2240 billion

A.According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military expenditure has reached a new record high of $2240 billion, growing 3.7% in real terms in 2022.

B.Europe saw the highest year-on-year increase in military spending in at least 30 years. The United States, China and Russia, the three largest military spenders, contributed 56% of total global military expenditure in 2022. These findings were released by SIPRI in its latest report on global military spending.

C.India’s military expenditure in 2022 was $81.4 billion, the fourth highest in the world. This represents an increase of 6% over the previous year’s spending.

D.Top 5 Ranks:- United States, China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia

Criteria of ranking:- Budgetary expenditure on defence

India’s rank: – 4th position

India’s rank in the previous year:- 3rd place due to substantial increase in Russian spending.

Shingles disease

Why in news: :Recently, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (GSK India) announced the much-awaited launch of its globally top-selling shingles vaccine Shingrix in India.

A.It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus that causes the same virus that causes chickenpox. It can occur anywhere in the human body.

B.It usually looks like a single strip of blisters that wraps on the left side or right side of your torso. The risk of shingles increases with aging and it is most common in people over the age of 50.

C.Its symptoms include pain, burning, tingling sensitivity to touch, etc. There is a vaccine available called Shingrix that helps prevent shingles and its complications.

D.Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of shingles. This causes severe pain in areas where you had a shingles rash. Vision loss: This can occur when shingles affects the eyes.

Important News: National

 Unique Land Parcel Identification Number (ULPIN)

Why in news: ULPIN has been adopted by 26 states and union territories so far.

A.It is part of the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP). ULPIN or BHU-Aadhaar is a 14 digit identification number given to a land parcel.

B.It will uniquely identify each survey parcel of land

and prevent land fraud, especially in rural India, where land records are outdated and disputed.

C.Identification is based on the longitude and latitude coordinates of the land parcel and relies on detailed surveys and geo-referenced cadastral maps.

D.It aims to compile every detail related to various properties from across the country. ULPIN is a single, authoritative source of truth for information on any parcel of land or property to provide integrated land services to citizens as well as all stakeholders.

E.Various types of data related to landed properties, which are currently in the possession of various ministries and departments, will also be linked with ULPIN

F.It is a central sector scheme which is being implemented by the Department of Land Resources under the Ministry of Rural Development.

Objective: It seeks to build on the commonalities that exist in the field of land records in different states to develop a suitable Integrated Land Information Management System (ILIMS) across the country.

Exercise INIOCHOS-23

Why in news: The Indian Air Force (IAF) recently announced that it will participate in exercise INIOCHOS-23 in Greece.

A.Exercise INIOCHOS is an annual multi-national air exercise conducted by the Hellenic Air Force of Greece.

B.It is based on a single base concept, which means the entire exercise takes place from a single air base. It will be held at Andravida Air Base in Greece.

C.Objective: To enhance international cooperation, synergy and interoperability among the participating air forces.

D.The exercise will be conducted in a realistic combat scenario involving a range of air and surface assets.

E.This will enable the participating parties to engage in professional interaction, which will provide valuable insights into each other's best practices.

F.The Indian Air Force will participate with four Sukhoi-30 MKI and two C-17 aircraft.

G.In addition to the hosts, others such as the United States, France and Italy, and Jordan and Saudi Arabia are participating in INIOCHOS-23

E shram portal

Why in news: Recently, the central government started matching ration card (National Food Security Act (NFSA)) data from the e-Shram portal, which is under the control of the Department of Food and Public Distribution.

A.Reconciliation of these two data sets revealed that out of 28.60 crore e-labour registrants, 20.63 crore persons have registered in the NFSA database. The e-Shram portal data had already coincided with PMSYM and NCS; Now it is being matched with the ration card.

B.The e-Shram portal was launched by the Union Labour Ministry in August 2021 to create a national database for migrant or unorganised workers across India. It is India's first national-level database of unorganised workers – including gig workers and platform workers.

C.The database in the e-Shram portal will help in giving a Universal Account Number (UAN) for unorganised or migrant workers. Using this number, workers can easily access social security and other government initiatives. This will help in inclusive economic growth. The beneficiaries can be easily identified. This helps in targeted development.

D.It will include details such as occupation, educational qualification, skill type, address etc. of the workers. To assist in their employment. As on February 24, 2023, more than 28.60 crore workers have been registered on this portal.

E.The e-Shram portal was already owned by Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan Dhan. The scheme was launched to provide old age security to unorganized workers. Because they are not covered under any other pension schemes in the country such as the New Pension Scheme or the Employment Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) or the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

 Thrissur Pooram

Why in news: Recently, the festivities of the famous Thrissur Pooram began with Kodiyettam, ceremonial flag hoisting, at the participating temples.

A.Thrissur Pooram is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Medom (April-May) in Kerala. It is considered the mother of all poorams, a cultural attraction that is above all other festivals.

B.It was the brainchild of Raja Ram Varma, popularly known as Saktan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin (1790-1805). It is celebrated in the grand gathering of gods and goddesses in and around Thrissur.

C.It focuses on the Vadakkunnathan temple, with all these temples sending their processions to pay homage to the presiding deity Shiva.

D.The processions and rituals of each deity follow a very strict itinerary, which is set in such a way that the pace of the Pooram festival – 36 hours without stopping – is maintained without any loss of energy.

E.A huge parade has been planned in the temple grounds, which includes Chenda Melam and Panch Vadyam music.

F.The last day of Pooram is the seventh day. It is often referred to as "Pakal Pooram".

Eco Biotraps

Why in news: Recently, in order to prevent the spread of vector-borne infections in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced to launch of a pilot project called ‘Eco Biotraps’

A.Eco biotraps are judged as eco-friendly traps, with 'attractors' that attract female mosquitoes and lay eggs in its water.

B.Eco biotraps are made of recycled cardboard. It consists of a small bag containing a mixture of attracted and pesticide. These nets are filled with water and kept in mosquito-affected areas.

C.Trap bags are attracted and insecticides (insect growth regulator granules) are immediately mixed with water. After which, the female attracted to the water attracts the mosquito to lay its eggs there. The insecticide present in the water destroys the eggs of the mosquito.

D.These are human diseases caused by parasites, viruses, and bacteria that are transmitted by vectors. The burden of these diseases is highest in tropical and subtropical regions, and they disproportionately affect the poorest populations.

E.Every year there are more than 700,000 deaths from diseases such as malaria, dengue, schistosomiasis, human African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis and onchocerciasis.

Important News: Days

 International chenobyl disaster remembrance day

Why in news:  International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day is observed every year on April 26 to raise awareness of the consequences of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster and the risks of nuclear energy in general.

A.Built in 1977, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was used to make electricity for the then Soviet Union, or modern Pripyat, Ukraine.

B.In 1982 there was a partial meltdown of reactor 1 at the Chernobyl plant, which caused some damage and took a few months to repair. The incident was not reported until the Chernobyl disaster occurred.

C.In 1986, an explosion at a nuclear power plant spread a radioactive cloud over large areas of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The severity of the disaster can be known from the fact that about 8.4 million people in the three European countries were exposed to radiation.

D.Following the 30th anniversary of the accident, on December 8, 2016, the United Nations adopted the resolution and declared April 26 as the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day.
