Gen Next Democracy Network

Why in News:

Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)'s ten-day event General Next Democracy Network concluded.

key points:

The Gen Next Democracy Network program brings youth from democratic countries to India and during the program, they get acquainted with India's heritage, culture and the working of Indian democracy.
In the closing ceremony, 27 delegates from six countries - Ghana, Bangladesh, Peru, Nepal, Brunei and Norway shared their experiences of visiting India.
Youth delegates from Bhutan, Jamaica, Malaysia, Poland, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Tanzania and Uzbekistan also met Young Indian Parliamentarians under the Gen Next Democracy Network program and shared their experiences of visiting India organized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR)

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), an autonomous organization of the Government of India, is headquartered in New Delhi.
Established in 1950 by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India, the Indian Council of Cultural Relations is involved in India's global cultural relations through cultural exchange with other countries and their peoples.
It also administers the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, instituted by the Government of India in 1965, the last award of which was awarded in 2009.

PM Garib Kalyan Sammelan

Why in News:

Participated in the Prime Minister's 'Garib Kalyan Sammelan' organized by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, in Shimla on May 31, 2022.

key points:

This unique public program is being organized across the country in State Capitals, District Headquarters and Krishi Vigyan Centers to mark the completion of eight years of the Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Sammelan provides an opportunity for the elected public representatives across the country to interact directly with the public in an effort to get public opinion about various welfare programs run by the government.
The 11th instalment of financial benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme has also been released by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during the conference.
During the conference, the Prime Minister interacted directly with the beneficiaries of various programs of the nine Ministries/Departments of the Government of India.

Operation Rakt Chandan

Why in News:

Under Operation Rakt Chandan, 14.63 metric tonnes of red sandalwood have been confiscated by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

key points:

Red sandalwood is a plant species found in forests in the Eastern Ghats region of Andhra Pradesh and has been designated on an 'endangered list' by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Red sandalwood is also listed in Appendix-II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife and Flora (CITES).
Its rich colour and therapeutic properties make it in high demand in Asia, especially China, for use in cosmetics, medicinal products and high-end wooden crafts.
The export of red sandalwood from India is restricted as per the foreign trade policy.

Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand

Why in News:

An expert committee headed by a retired Supreme Court (SC) judge has been constituted by the Uttarakhand government to review all relevant laws governing the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the personal affairs of the residents of Uttarakhand.

key points:

Uniform Civil Code also provides for uniformity in-laws like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption for all religious communities (Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian) along with uniform law for the whole country.
Article 44 of the Directive Principles of Policy of the Constitution of India states that the State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.
Uniform civil code is followed by India in almost all civil matters, such as the Indian Contract Act, 1972, Civil Procedure Code, Sale of Goods Act, Transfer of Property Act, 1882, Partnership Act 1932, Evidence Act 1872 etc.
At present Goa is the only state which has implemented Uniform Civil Code in the state.

Goa Foundation Day

Every year 30 May is celebrated as the Foundation Day of Goa.
Goa was ruled by the Portuguese for about 450 years and in December 1961, Goa was handed over to the Indian administration.
Daman and Diu and Goa were annexed to the Indian mainland on 19 December through Operation Vijay by the Government of India after the failure of diplomatic efforts with the Portuguese in 1961.
On 30 May 1987, the region was bifurcated, the state of Goa was formed, and Daman and Diu were made a union territory.

Param Ananta Supercomputer

Why in News:

key points:

Param Anant Supercomputing Facility has been set up under Phase 2 of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
The National Supercomputing Mission is a joint initiative run by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
The PARAM Infinite supercomputer is equipped with an 838 teraflops supercomputing facility and is based on contact liquid cooling technology.
So far, 15 supercomputers with a total computing capacity of 24 petaflops have been installed across the country under the National Supercomputing Mission. All these supercomputers are manufactured in India and work on an indigenously developed software stack developed by the Center for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
