 Operation Kaveri

Why in news: A civil war has broken out between the military and a paramilitary force in Sudan and it has resulted in the deaths of more than 400 people. Scroll down to know everything about the conflict.

A.Operation Kaveri is the latest evacuation operation launched by India to rescue its citizens and friendly nationals from war zones.

B.India deployed two Super Hercules C-130J aircraft in Jeddah across the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia to evacuate its citizens.

C.There are around 3,000 Indians in Sudan and the Indian Embassy is making all efforts to evacuate us. No Indian has been injured in the war so far.

D.This conflict arose due to a dispute over an internationally supported plan to establish a new civilian government, four years after the overthrow of authoritarian leader Omar al-Bashir and two years after a military coup. Both sides are accusing each other of obstructing the transition, resulting in widespread violence and instability.

100 Food Streets in 100 districts

Why in news: The Ministry of Health has proposed the operationalization of ‘100 food streets across 100 districts’ in the country to promote safe and hygienic food practices.

A.It aims to promote safe and healthy food practices, reduce foodborne illnesses and improve overall health outcomes.

B.Implementing Authority is Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in collaboration with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

C.The funding is per food road/road provided to states and Union Territories. Financial assistance of ₹1 crore for the district.

C.Implementation through National Health Mission (NHM) in convergence with Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and technical support from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Number of Food Streets 100 Food Streets in 100 Districts across the Country 

D.It was launched in 2013 amalgamating the National Rural Health Mission and the National Urban Health Mission, with the objective of achieving universal access to equitable, affordable and quality health services that are accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.

LockBit Ransomware

Why in news: Recent reports have observed that the LockBit Ransomware is targeting Mac devices.

A.Lockbit is the first major ransomware specifically designed to target Apple computers. It can target both old Macs and newers running on Apple Silicon.

B.Lockbit was first detected in 2019 and has been dubbed an “ABCD” virus due to the file extension used when encrypting the victim’s files. It is run by the Lockbit gang.

C.It is classified as a “crypto virus” because it requests payment in cryptocurrency to decrypt files.

D.Target: Ransomware targets individuals who feel a substantial hindrance from disruption and can pay huge sums of money in exchange for access to files…

E.Ransomware is a type of malicious software that can infect a computer system by blocking access to the stored data by encrypting the files. The perpetrator then demands ransom from the owner in exchange for the decryption key.

National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts.

Why in news: Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways will inaugurate the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCWPC) at IIT Chennai.

A.It is being set up under the flagship Sagarmala programme of the Ministry of Shipping.

B.It has been set up at the IIT-Discovery campus in Chennai, Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 77 crore.

C.It works as the technology arm of the Ministry of Shipping and provides necessary technical support to ports, IWAI and other institutions.

D.Mandate: To develop state-of-the-art technologies and application products to provide solutions to various challenges faced by ports and shipping sector.

E.Objective: To promote port-led development in the country through the use of India’s 7,500 km long coastline, 14,500 km of potentially navigable waterways and strategic location on major international maritime trade routes.

F.The projects under the scheme are classified into five pillars:

  • Port modernization and new port development;
  • Increase port connectivity;
  • Port-led industrialization;
  • Coastal Community Development;
  • Coastal shipping and inland water transport

First Water Metro

Why in news: PM Modi will inaugurate the first phase of the Kochi Water Metro project in Kerala on 25 April.

A.The metro project in Kochi will begin with eight electric hybrid boats developed by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The project is being funded by the Government of Kerala and German company KfW.

  1. It includes boats that are hybrid, battery-powered, air-conditioned and disabled-friendly among other features. The water metro will operate on water bodies like any other ferry or traditional boat service, but with modern facilities, enhanced safety and security measures.
  2. Kochi Water metro has been envisaged as a feeder service of the Kochi metro rail, which has been operational since 2017. While boats have been designed as coaches of Kochi Metro, boat terminals, passenger entry and exit gates, ticket counters and safety measures mirror the features of the metro rail service.

D.The first phase of KWM service will be launched from High Court-Vipin and Vytila-Kakkanad terminals.

E.Tickets for the boat journey will start at Rs 20 and weekly and monthly passes will be available for frequent passengers.

F.The Kochi One Card can be used for both Kochi Metro Rail and Kochi Water Metro.

Puri–Gangasagar Divya Kashi Yatra to promote religious tourism.

Why in news: Indian Railways is all set to launch Puri-Gangasagar Divya Kashi Yatra to promote religious tourism.

A.The objective of this initiative is to provide a unique opportunity to pilgrims to visit important religious sites across the country.

B.The tour is being launched under the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ and ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ schemes, which promote domestic tourism in India.

C.The Puri-Gangasagar Divya Kashi Yatra is scheduled to start its journey from Pune on April 28, 2023 and will last for 9 nights and 10 days.

D.The yatra is aimed at covering important religious places in Puri, Kolkata, Gaya, Varanasi and Prayagraj. These include Jagannath Temple, Konark Temple, Lingaraj Temple in Puri, Kali Bari in Kolkata, Ganga Sagar in Gaya, Vishnu Pad Temple and Bodh Gaya, Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Ganga Ghat in Varanasi as well as Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj. 

E.This scheme is completing the “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” scheme.  Knowledge of culture, traditions and practices of different states and union territories will increase understanding and bonding among states, thereby strengthening the unity and integrity of India.

Zero shadow day observed in banglore

Why in news: On April 25, Bengaluru will experience a rare celestial event known as ‘Zero Shadow Day’, in which no vertical object in the city will cast a shadow for a short period of time. A.The event will start at 12:17 pm.

B.To commemorate the occasion, events will be held at the campus of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) at Koramangala in Bengaluru.

C.A unique astronomical event known as zero shadow day occurs twice a year at locations between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees latitude. When the sun is at its highest point in the sky during this time, neither living beings nor inanimate objects cast any shadow.

D.According to the Astronomical Society of India (ASI), when the Sun is properly in peak position, it will not cast a shadow on an object.

E.During both Uttarayan and Dakshinayan, the sun’s depreciation will be similar to the latitude of individuals who live between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees latitude. According to the ASI website, on these two days the sun will be directly above in the afternoon, and there will be no shadow of any object on the ground.

F.This phenomenon occurs when the sun’s degradation corresponds to the latitude of the location. Even though it lasts just a split second, the effect can be felt for up to two minutes.

World malaria day

Why in news: World Malaria Day (WMD) is an international observance observed on April 25 every year and recognizes global efforts to control malaria.

A.World Malaria Day aims to raise awareness of the devastating impact of malaria and mobilize resources and support for malaria control and prevention programs in endemic countries.

B.The day serves as an opportunity for individuals, organizations and governments to come together and renew their commitment to eliminate malaria, which is a preventable and treatable disease.

C.The theme of World Malaria Day 2023 will be marked under the theme “Time to deliver zero malaria: investment, innovation, implementation”. 

D.World Malaria Day is important because it raises awareness about global efforts to control, prevent and eventually eradicate malaria.

E.Malaria is a parasitic disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where malaria accounts for more than 90% of deaths.
