In view of Budget Session of Parliament, Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has called a meeting of leaders of all parties in the Upper House on 31st of this month. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is also expected to hold an all party meeting on 29th of this month. The meetings will be held to ensure smooth functioning of both the Houses of Parliament during the session.
 
The Government has also convened an all party meeting on 30th of this month to seek support of political parties to ensure smooth conduct of business in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
 
The Budget Session will begin on 29th of this month with President Ram Nath Kovind's address to the Joint Sitting of both the Houses of Parliament.
 
The Union Budget will be presented on 1st of next month. In view of COVID-19 pandemic, the Rajya Sabha will function from 9 AM to 2 PM and Lok Sabha will function from 4 PM to 9 PM. The first part of the session will conclude on 15th February while the second part of the session will begin on 8th of March and will conclude on 8th April.

1. India Ranks 7th in Global Climate Risk Index 2021 of Germanwatch

  • India has been placed among the top 10 most affected countries by climate change, in the Global Climate Risk Index 2021 published by the Bonn-based environmental think tank Germanwatch. India ranked as the seventh worst-hit country in terms of climate change in 2019.
  • Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Bahamas were the top three most affected countries in 2019 respectively.
  • Between 2000-2019, Puerto Rico, Myanmar and Haiti were the countries most affected by the impacts of such weather events.
  • The Global Climate Risk Index 2021 is the 16th edition of the annual report and has taken into account the data available for 2019 and from 2000 to 2019.

2. SpaceX breaks ISRO’s Record by launching 143 Satellites

  • SpaceX successfully launched its ambitious rideshare mission called Transporter-1, carrying 143 small satellites, and created a new record of launching many satellites from a single rocket.
  • With this launch, SpaceX broke the record set by ISRO in February 2017 for deploying 104 satellites onboard PSLV in a single mission.
  • The 143 satellites included 133 commercial and government satellites and 10 Starlink satellites of SpaceX.

3. IMF revises India’s growth forecast to -8% in FY21

  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has pegged the Indian economy to contract by 8 per cent in the current financial year 2020-21, in its latest World Economic Outlook, released on 26 January 2021. The IMF expects GDP of India to rise to 11.5 per cent in the next financial year i.e. 2021-22.
  • Apart from this, the IMF projected the global growth to contract at 3.5 per cent in 2020. The global economy is projected to grow by 5.5 per cent in 2021 and 4.2 per cent in 2022 as per the IMF.

4. UP becomes first Indian State to have 2 Expressway airstrips

  • In Uttar Pradesh, a new 3,300-metre-long airstrip has been constructed near Kurebhar on Purvanchal Expressway. With this new airstrip, Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in India having two airstrips on expressways. Uttar Pradesh also has an airstrip on Lucknow-Agra Expressway. Airstrips on expressways are designed to facilitate emergency landing and take-off of fighter planes.
  • Indian Air Force had examined Yamuna Expressway and Agra Expressway. Aircraft like Mirage 2000, Jaguar, Sukhoi 30 and Online Classroom Program Hercules had already landed on Lucknow-Agra Expressway.

5. India celebrates 72nd Republic Day

  • India observed 72nd Republic Day on 26 January 2021 at Rajpath in New Delhi.
  • Republic Day marks the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950.
  • Our constitution replaced Government of India Act 1935 as the governing document of India.
  • Republic Day parade saw 32 tableaux comprising 17 from states and UTs, 9 from ministries and 6 from defence arm
  • Rafale fighter jets took part in Republic Day flypast 2020 for the first time.

6. International Customs Day: 26 January

  • International Customs Day (ICD) is observed every year on 26 January
  • Aim: To recognize the role of customs officials and agencies and focus on the working conditions and challenges that customs officers face in their jobs
  • Theme 2021: Customs bolstering Recovery, Renewal and Resilience
  • It was introduced by World Customs Organization (WCO) in 1953 during Customs Cooperation Council (CCC) session, which was renamed as World Customs Organization
  • WCO HQs: Brussels, Belgium

7. President approves conferment of 119 Padma awards

  • President of India distributes Padma Awards on every Republic Day to the civilians of India.
  • This year, President has approved conferment of 119 Padma awards, that comprises of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri
  • Awardees:
    • Padma Vibhushan: Shinzo Abe and late singer SP Balasubramaniam
    • Padma Bhushan: Tarun Gogoi and Keshubhai Patel, Ram Vilas Paswan, Sumitra Mahajan
  • Eligibility: All persons without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex.

8. Ahmedabad host Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 championship

  • Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy 2020-21 (cricket) has been started at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad from 26 to 31 January 2021.
  • As per schedule, four quarter finals will be played from 26-27 January, two semi finals on January 29, with the final scheduled on January 31.
  • The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is a Twenty20 cricket domestic championship in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, among the teams from Ranji Trophy.

9. Manjamma Jogathi received Padma Shri awards

  • Manjamma Jogathi has been conferred with Padma Shri awards after decades of social and financial struggle
  • She is a transgender from Karnataka who has over the past many decades practised and single-handedly popularised rural folk arts, especially Jogati Nritya, Janapada songs, practiced in rural Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh
  • She was awarded Karnataka Janapada Academy Award in 2006 and was appointed its 1st transgender President in 2019.

10. Rebelo de Sousa elected as President of Portugal for 2nd term

  • Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa (72 years) has been elected as the President of Portugal for his second five-year term with landslide victory.
  • He is from Social Democratic Party and won 61% of the total votes in 2021 Portuguese presidential election.
  • He was serving as the President of Portugal since 9 March 2016.
  • He will assume office for his second term on March 9, 2021.
  • Portugal Capital: Lisbon.
  • Currency of Portugal: Euro.

11. International Day of Education: 24 January

  • International Day of Education was held for the first time in 2019.
  • The day was adopted by United Nations General Assembly on 3rd December 2018.

13. Andaman Lt Governor flagged-off fleet of electric buses

  • Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, D K Joshi has flagged-off fleet of 40 electric buses.
  • It is being executed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN Limited), which is a PSU under Ministry of Power.
  • Introduction of electric buses in Andaman union territory and will help cut down tail pipe emissions as well as provide comfortable public transport.
  • These buses will provide last mile connectivity to NAMMA Metro network.

14. VP inaugurates Integrated Weapons System Design Centre

  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated Integrated Weapons System Design Centre at DRDO’s APJ Abdul Kalam Missile complex in Hyderabad.
  • Integrated Weapon System Design facility will enhance the capability in design and development of command & control systems for surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems and ballistic missile defence systems.
  • It will display missile technologies and weapon systems and the centre will be the backbone for outreach activities.
