ICC World Test Championship

The ICC World Test Championship is an international cricket competition organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the ten test cricket-playing nations. This tournament maintains a rating system based on all Test matches played throughout the cricketing season. According to the rating system of the Test Championship:

  • Winning a Test Championship final earns you the highest points.
  • If a team wins, it earns points. If the team loses, it receives fewer points.
  • In the event of a tie, the lower-rated team will be favoured at the expense of the higher-rated team.

Test Championship - Point Scoring System

The ICC agreed that in the World Test Championship, regardless of the series duration, the same amount of points would be available from each series so that countries who played fewer Tests would not be penalized. Points are given based on a team's performance in a Test rather than a series. If a match is 'dead rubber' where the result of a series match is predecided, points are evenly split between playing teams.

In a five-match series, 20 per cent of the points would be accessible each match, whereas 50 per cent of the points would be available each match in a two-match series. The ICC also agreed that a tie is worth half a victory, and a draw is worth a third of a win. According to the points system of the ICC World Test Championship:

  • A team receives 12 points and 100% in case of a win.
  • A team receives 4 points and 33.33% in case of a draw.
  • A team receives 6 points and 50% in case of a tie.
  • A team receives 0 points if they lose the match
