History of the Postal Service in India
Postal service in India began in the 18th century. The service was first used and administered by the East India Company. They formed postal offices in the main cities of India like Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata. In 1774, the Governor-General of the British, Warren Hastings, opened the post offices for the general public. In 1852, the first postal stamp was introduced.
Post-independence, the postal service charge was transferred to the Indian Government. Since then, the postal service of India has been headstrong. The Indian Postal Department adopted the "Service Before Self" motto in April 1959.
The major change that revolutionized the postal service in India was the introduction of speed post in 1986. The postal service of India played a major role in transferring commodities and money across the country through parcel and money order services.
Recently, during the pandemic, the Postal Department of India provided critical help by delivering medicines and vaccines to different parts of the country.
