  1. Indus River- 3180 km: Indus is the most popular river after which our country got its name. Stretching at a distance of 3180 km, this river begins from the famous Mansarovar Lake, this river crosses Gilgit, Ladakh, and Baltistan before entering Pakistan. 
  2. Brahmaputra River- 2900 km: Another river that originates from the Mansarovar range is the Brahmaputra river that spreads across 2900 km. The Brahmaputra is the only river that people consider male in India. Known as the Yarlung Tsangpo River in China, this river enters India through Arunachal Pradesh. 
  3. The Ganga River- 2525 km: The Ganges, popularly known as Ganga in India, is the longest national river that stretches across a distance of a whopping 2525 km. Originated from the Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand, this magnificent river begins at the intersection point of the famous Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in Devprayag in Uttarakhand.
  4. Godavari River- 1464 km: The famous Godavari river is the second largest river in India, with a length of 1464km. This river commences from Triambakeshwar in Nasik, Maharashtra and travels through Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh, after which it eventually intersects with the Bay of Bengal. 
  5. Krishna River- 1400 km: Following the Ganga and Godavari, Krishna is the third-largest river in the country in terms of distance and fourth-largest in terms of river inlet area and water inflows. It acts as one of the principal sources of irrigation for Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. This famous river arises from Mahabaleshwar near Pune and ultimately meets the Bay of Bengal. 
  6. Yamuna River- 1376 km: The Yamuna, popularly known as Jamuna, arose from the Yamunotri glacier near the Banderpoonch peak in Uttarakhand. It is the most elongated arm of the famous Ganga river and flows through the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. 
  7. Narmada River- 1312 km: Popularly known as Rewa and previously Nerbudda, Narmada is the fifth largest river across India that originates from the Amarkantak. Known as the lifeline of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, this is the only river that flows in the westward direction. 
  8. Mahanadi River- 890 km: The Mahanadi River derives from Raipur, Chattisgarh, and is often known as ‘the distress of Odisha’. While earlier this river was infamous for its staggering floods,  the development of the Hirakud Dam has significantly adjusted the situation. 
  9. Kaveri River- 800 km: Kaveri River, also known as Cauvery, is another largest and the most sacred river in India. This river rises from the  Brahmagiri Hill, and it flows through Tamil Nadu before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. 
  10. Tapti River- 724 km: Tapti River is one of the few rivers that stem from Peninsular India and grows in the Betul district and empties off into the Gulf of Khambhat (Arabian Sea).
