Abraham Accords: History, Significance

The Abraham Accords is a joint statement that has been made between Israel, the United States (US), and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the 13th of August, 2020. The treaty is also a reference for an agreement reached between Bahrain, Israel, and UAE for maintaining normal and cordial relations amongst the three countries. The Abraham Accords marked the first public recognition and normalisation of relations between Israel and any Arab country since that of Jordan in 1994.

Abraham Accords Significance

The Abraham Accords pointed out the following stipulations to be adhered to.

  • There would be embassies for UAE and Bahrain in Israel. The two countries would work in collaboration with Israel to promote across various sectors, including trade, tourism, and security.
  • The Abraham Accords had religious significance as well, which allowed Muslims to one of the holiest sites in Israel, the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
  • After the Accords were signed the same year, Morocco and Sudan also normalized Israel relations.

Significance of the Name Abraham Accords

The agreement between the Abraham Accord Countries was named Abraham Accords after Abraham. It emphasises the shared origin of belief between Judaism and Islam. Both are Abrahamic religions that strictly adopt and believe in the monotheistic worship of Abraham as God.

  • Maintaining and strengthening peace in the Middle East through mutual understanding and coexistence.
  • Respecting human dignity and religious freedom.
