Moving through the history of the Indian Independence Struggle, women have faced numerous tortures, exploitations, and atrocities. These 10 Women Freedom Fighters were brave and intelligent and sacrificed their lives for the nation.

They led the charge of the Indian Independence Struggle and lit the flame of protest and rebellion all over the country, battling imperialism. Dedicating their lives to the motherland, they are a true inspiration for all of us. Though forgotten by time, their contribution to our freedom movement cannot be ignored.

1. Sarojini Naidu

Conferred the title of The Nightingale of India, Sarojini Naidu was the first lady to become the governor of a province and a state in independent India.

She played a huge role in the Civil Disobedience Movement and Quit India Movement, and also supported Gandhiji in the Sabarmati pact, Satyagraha Pledge, and Khilafat issue.

2. Kamala Nehru

A staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi and the wife of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Kamala Nehru made her entry into the freedom struggle of India with the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1921.

She was amongst the first freedom fighters to raise their voices for women's empowerment.

3. Kasturba Gandhi

Though largely remembered as the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, in herself, was among the bravest Women Freedom Fighters.

She was the inspiration behind Satyagraha. She was a political activist who taught Indians basic health and hygiene and the value of reading and writing.

4. Moolmati

Mother of the great Indian revolutionary Ram Prasad Bismil, Moolmati was a little-known patriot who supported her son's revolutionary ideas.

Known as the sacrificial mother, when her son was hanged by the British rulers, she addressed public meetings, arranged processions, and offered her other son's support to the freedom struggle.

5. Captain Lakshmi Sahgal

The first woman in India to lead an all-women regiment, the Rani Jhansi Regiment of the INA, Captain Lakshmi Sahgal was one of the greatest Women Freedom Fighters in India.

She was a revolutionary, a doctor, and a social activist who worked for the welfare of the untouchables and patients till her last breath.

6. Aruna Asaf Ali

Popularly known as the grand old lady of India, Aruna Asaf Ali was an Indian educator and political activist whose protests and strikes resulted in the improvement of the conditions of the prisoners in Tihar jail.

Her participation in the Quit India Movement by hoisting the national flag at the Gowalia Tank Maidan is unforgettable.

7. Madam Bhikaiji Cama

Madam Cama was a fiery lady who played an important role in the early years of India's freedom struggle.

Known as the mother of the Indian Revolution, she raised her voice for equality between men and women.

She was the first person to hoist the Indian flag on foreign soil in Germany.

8. Annie Besant

Though a British socialist and activist, Annie Besant's contribution to the Indian freedom movement with the foundation of the All India Home Rule League cannot be disregarded.

She fought actively for self-rule for India along with Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

9. Rani Lakshmibai

One of the first Women Freedom Fighters to fight in the Indian Independence Movement of 1857, Rani Lakshmibai is considered a symbol of resistance to the British Raj.

She's remembered for her bravery and valour in the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58.

10. Savitribai Phule

Considered to be the pioneer of the feminist movement in India, Savitribai Phule was the first female teacher at the first girl's school in India.

Fighting against the orthodox norms of society during British rule, she took the first step toward educating girls.
