Coplanar Force System is a system of forces acting on the same plane. Any external agent that is responsible for producing a change in the condition of rest or motion is called a force. If any object is acted upon by a group of forces, it is considered a “system of force” or “force system”. A system of force can be broadly classified on the basis of the positioning of the line of action of its forces into a coplanar force system and a non-coplanar force system.

Forces can be manipulated in a variety of ways. It is generally easier to work with a vast, intricate system of forces by breaking it down into smaller and smaller problems. It is simpler to resolve coplanar systems of forces than others. In this article, we will be discussing the Coplanar force system definition, classification, and real-life examples of the coplanar system of forces.

What is the Coplanar Force System?

A coplanar force system is a category of system of force. The word coplanar force system has two main parts: coplanar and force system. Here, coplanar implies that he things should be in the same plane, whereas force system implies a group of forces. By combining the concepts of these two, the definition of a coplanar force system can be easily figured out.

Coplanar Force System Definition

A coplanar force system can be defined as, “A group of forces acting on an object is called a coplanar system of forces if the line of action of all the forces lies in the same plane.” In most engineering problems, we deal with the analysis of objects acted upon by a coplanar system of forces.

Types of Coplanar Force System

In the same plane, various forces may have different arrangements of their lines of action, and the basis of the classification of force systems is the line of action of forces in the force system. As a result, coplanar force systems may be further classified. The coplanar force system can be of the following types:

  1. Collinear coplanar system of force
  2. Concurrent coplanar system of force
  3. Parallel coplanar system of force
  4. Non-concurrent non-parallel system of force

Collinear Coplanar Force System

A coplanar force system is considered a collinear coplanar system of force if the line of action of all the forces is along the same line. In other words, we can say that all forces have a common line of action.

Collinear

Concurrent Coplanar Force System

A coplanar force system is considered a concurrent coplanar system of force if the line of action of all the forces passes through the same point. A point of concurrency exists in a concurrent force system.

Concurrent

Parallel Coplanar Force System

A coplanar force system is considered a parallel coplanar system of force in which the line of action of all the forces is parallel to each other. A parallel coplanar system of force may be of two types: like parallel coplanar force system and unlike parallel coplanar force system.

Parallel

Non-Concurrent Non-Parallel Force System

A coplanar force system is considered a non-concurrent non-parallel coplanar system of forces if the line of action of all the forces is neither passing through a common point nor parallel to each other.

Non-concurrent
