Once there was a boy who lived with his grandfather, grandmother, and aunts. One day the grandfather bought a monkey for five rupees from a Tonga driver and named it 'Toto'. Grandfather decided he would add the little fellow to his private zoo. Toto was a pretty monkey who was mischievous as well. But grandmother didn't like pets, she always screamed if she saw one inside the house. So the boy and his grandfather decided that the presence of Toto must be kept a secret.

Toto was tied to a peg fastened to the wall. In an attempt to get free, it tore the wallpapers and curtains. The next day grandfather had to go to Saharanpur for collecting his pension. He could not take the risk of leaving Toto with his grandson and so he took it along with him. The boy tried really hard to convince his grandmother to keep Toto as a pet, and finally, she agreed. She decided to let Toto stay in the stable with Nana, their donkey.

Why was Toto's presence kept a secret?

  1. Because he was very mischievous.
  2. There was no space in the house for new pets.
  3. The grandmother was scared of pets.
  4. He would have been harmed by other pets in the house.

Toto’s presence was kept a secret as the grandmother was scared of pets. The phrase in the chapter that "Grandmother detested animals whenever she spotted one within the house, she would scream.

The youngster and his grandfather came to the conclusion that Toto's presence must remain a secret." underline the fact that the grandmother feared animals.

As a result, nobody knew that Toto the monkey was there.
