CAT 2017 | Verbal Ability | Breaking Story #10

By N Shiva Guru|Updated : January 23rd, 2017

CAT 2017 Aspirants often like techniques to remember words from Vocabulary, rules from Grammar and the pattern of usage in general. There is, however, nothing that even comes close to seeing things in context. That is why we started off this piece: to have fun while you learn and put all your learning in context and in perspective. Not going into intricate details, we start off with today's piece to help CAT 2017 Students: Here we go...

A New Story Begins, this one's called 'Conflict':

I ask her not to spend too much time in front of the mirror. Because sometimes she feels like she’s beautiful and then she feels really low that she’s not and then goes through the whole experience all over again. And I have to tell her that it’s not the physical beauty that matters. She argues that people who are beautiful are gifted and are forgiven easily. She argues that she would forgive her ex if he came back now. She says he was too good for a handsome man. At this point I lose my temper and ask her to stop feeling inferior. After all the years of being headstrong as a child, i didn’t think it would come to this-her life. Hours in front of the mirror doing things to her hair, her face; she just wants to look like that chick in her class and get all the attention. No, no, she’s not one to sleep around. Why am I defending her? I am her mind, silly.

I know my mind has been saying things to you some of which are true. Why, what’s wrong in looking beautiful? We say we are beautiful the way we are but how many of us are actually cool about the way we look? Don’t we yearn to be as beautiful as that girl who’s got a cute boyfriend? I think that if you are beautiful, you are confident. I know my mind will argue and tell you that it’s not necessarily true. Ha! That’s because he knows that I am not pretty. I know it seems a little weird, my mind being a male, but he’s my best friend and my brother.

I remember what happened to her that day. She was crying, the poor darling. Her best friend had left her for good-I mean the physical one. I asked her how she could call someone a best friend when he leaves you when you need most. She tells me that she wasn’t there for him too. Expectation can be lethal, she says. I have no choice but to nod.

Trusting someone with life can end up in death once but by trusting no one you end up dying many times. So I trust him, our relationship, to  go the distance. My mind argues that it might not be so. He keeps scaring me. I keep blasting him till he shuts up and silently watches me from a distance. I have finally put him in his place, I think. Once in a while I miss my mind; he would have told me that I deserve him whenever I felt he was too cute for me. He would have calmed me down whenever I had a fight, telling me it was not entirely my fault. I sometimes cry too and when he comes close to pacify me, I shout at his face, blaming him for all that happened telling him had he been a little kinder, my life would have been smooth. He still maintains that my relationship is dangerous. I ask him to shut up and shove his advice up his throat.

To be continued...
