# Physics Important topics for BITSAT 2018

BITSAT 2018 is 25 days away and the preparation strategy requires the complete understanding of the syllabus. As 40 questions are expected from the Physics section, it is equally important to focus on this section apart from Mathematics and Chemistry. Here is the detailed syllabus of Physics for BITSAT 2018.

## BITSAT 2018 Physics Syllabus

### Mechanics:

SI units, Fundamental units, Dimensional Analysis, Precision and significant figures, Fundamental measurements in Physics through Physical Scale, Vernier caliper, and Screw gauge.

Vectors and its properties, Motion (constant acceleration), Vectors for Velocity, Position and Acceleration, Motion-constant acceleration; Projectile; Relative; and Uniform circular motion.

Newton’s laws including free-body diagrams and force resolution, Motion- involving inclined plane; blocks and pulley systems, Circular motion including Centripetal force, Frame of reference.

Impulse and momentum, Principle of conservation of momentum. Particle's motion during the collision, Momentum for particles as well as a system of particles, Center of mass.

Energy involved in work, Conservation of energy and conservative forces, Power, Conservation of mechanical energy- Kinetic and Potential Energies.

Angular motion- displacement, velocity and acceleration, Rotational motion and Rolling motion (involving constant angular acceleration), Moment of inertia, Parallel axes theorem and perpendicular axes theorem, Kinetic energy-energy, Torque and angular momentum, Angular momentum conservation.

Law of gravitation, Potential energy due to gravitational forces and Gravitational Potential and Field, Escape velocity, Kepler’s laws for planetary motion and Motion of Satellite.

Laws concerning Elasticity, Viscosity, Pressure and Density (Hooke's Law), Mechanics of fluid and Pascal's Law, Principle of Archimedes, Surface Tension, Capilllary Action and Bernoulli’s theorem, Stoke's Law, Critical Velocity and Reynolds Number.

### Waves and Optics:

Simple harmonic motion, Equation of Motion for Simple harmonic motion, Spring mass system, Simple Pendulum (Physical Pendulum), Compound pendulum, Forced Harmonic Motion, Damped Harmonic Motion, Resonance, Progressive sinusoidal waves, Waves in strings and pipes (Travelling and standing-velocity, power transmitted), Interference and the Principle of Superposition of Waves, Beats, Doppler Effect.

Light wave and its nature, Huygens' Principle, Geometrical Optics-Reflection, Refraction, Lenses and Mirrors; Lens Maker's Formula, Magnification, Image Defects, Instruments such as telescope and microscope, Interference, Young’s double slit experiment, Interference from thin films, Diffraction through single slit, Basic understanding regarding Electromagnetic waves and their characteristics, Electromagnetic spectrum (Absorption, Emission, Ultraviolet and Infrared), Polarization and its states, Law of Malus, Brewster’s law.

### Heat, Calorimetry and Thermodynamics:

Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics, Thermal equilibrium and temperature, Kinetic theory of gases and Deductions from Kinetic Theory, Principle of Calorimetry- Specific heat capacities, Heat Transfer-Conduction, Thermal conductivity, Convection and Radiation (Blackbody Radiation); Laws of cooling, Work, Heat- Laws of Thermodynamics (First and Second), Heat Engines (Carnot engine)– Coefficient of performance and Efficiency of cycles.

### Electromagnetism:

Coulomb’s law, Electric field and its distribution for discrete and continuous charges, Electric potential due to point and continuous charge, Potential energy due to electric charges, Flux of an Electric field, Gauss’ law, Applications of Gauss’ law, Electric dipole (Electric Field and Potential energy due to a dipole; Torque on a dipole), Capacitance-parallel plate capacitor and combination of capacitors; Dielectrics (Electric field and Energy).

Electric Current in conductors-Ohm’s law, Electric current and Current density, Joule heating; Direct Current circuits, Series and parallel circuit with cells and resistor, Kirchoff’s laws, Special circuits (Potentiometer and Wheatstone bridge), Electrical Resistance; Origin of Resistivity and its temperature dependence.

Biot-Savart’s law, Magnetic field due to current, Applications of Biot-Savart’s law, Ampere’s law, Applications of Ampere’s law, Lorentz force, Effects of magnetic field on current carrying conductors, Current loop (Magnetic moment and torque); Galvanometer (Voltmeter and Ammeter-their conversion in to Galvanometer).

Faraday’s law of Electromagnetic Induction, Lenz’s law, Induced EMF, Induced Electric Field, Eddy currents, Self-Inductance, LR Circuit, Energy stored in an Inductor, Mutual Inductance, Transformers and generators, Alternating current (Peak and RMS value; Circuits), LCR circuits.

### ModernPhysics:

Light and matter (Wave particle Duality), Photoelectric effect, Threshold wavelength, De Broglie wavelength, Rutherford’s experiment and its shortcomings, Hydrogen spectra, Bohr’s model and its limitations, Radioactivity, Nuclear reaction (Nuclear Fission and Nuclear fusion), Binding energy.

Semiconductors, Qualitative idea regarding Energy bands in solids, conductors, insulators and semiconductors; p-n Junction, Semiconductor diode; Forward and Reverse bias (their I-V characteristics), diode as a rectifier, Drift current; I-V characteristics of Light Emitting Diode, photodiode, solar cell, and Zener diode; Zener diode as a voltage regulator.

Junction transistor, transistor action, characteristics of a transistor; transistor as an amplifier (common emitter configuration) and oscillator; Logic gates- OR, AND, NOT, NAND and NOR; Transistor as a switch.
