The Bell-Coleman cycle (also called Joule or "reverse" Brayton cycle) is a refrigeration cycle in which the working fluid is a gas that is compressed and expanded but does not change phase. Air is primarily this working medium. Since there is no condensation and evaporation in this gas cycle, the equivalent components of the condenser and evaporator in the vapor compression cycle are the hot and cold gas-to-gas heat exchangers.
