What is the ARPANET Full Form in Computer?

The full form of ARPANET is Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. The ARPANET is the progenitor of the Internet and was a pioneering long-haul network supported by the Advanced Research Projects Agency of the United States Department of Defense (ARPA). It worked as the central backbone during the creation of the Internet and served as a test bed for various aspects of internetworking technology development and testing. The ARPANET was created by connecting packet-switching computers via leased lines.

History of ARPANET

Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET Full Form) was invented in the year 1969 by ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) of defence from the US department. It was tested by using various hosts or computers at different high schools and sharing the information and messages among them.

After the successful testing and execution, it was handed over to the defence network and military for usage. The access to the ARPANET started expanding in the year 1981 after the NSF (National Science Foundation) funded the CSNET (Computer Science Network).

Characteristics of ARPANET

As we know the ARPANET full form is Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. Its original objective was to use telephone connections to connect computers at research organisations. Now let us have a look at the characteristics of ARPANET given below.

  • It works similarly to WAN (Wide Area Network).
  • It uses the Packet switching technique.
  • ARPANET is divided into two parts: Host and Subnet.
  • It makes use of IMP(Internet Message Processors) for subnetting.
  • ARPANET is a type of WAN (Wide Area Network). The Advanced Research Project Agency was responsible for the creation of ARPANET in 1969.
  • ARPANET was built with the intention of serving something as large as a nuclear tank.
  • Prior to the introduction of ARPANET, all networks had a telephonic link and operated on the circuit switching premise. However, this left the network open to attack. Even a single dropped line would result in the termination of all ongoing talks.
  • The ARPANET was the first network to implement the packet switching principle. The tests were carried out on host computers and inside the confines of a subnet.

Advantages of ARPANET

We have already discussed the ARPANET full form, history and characteristics of ARPANET, and now, we will be discussing its advantages. Let us see the advantages of using ARPANET :

  • It can provide service under a Nuclear Attack.
  • Used for collaborations through mails.
  • It helped in efficiently transferring important data and files of defence.

Disadvantages of ARPANET

Apart from various advantages, there are some limitations of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET Full Form). The ARPANET’s architecture demands far too much standardisation and control. There was no further upgrading possible. Further, the other disadvantages of ARPANET are provided below.

  • It is complex to handle ARPANET as the number of LAN connections increases.
  • It cannot fit into the advanced technology available and transition through time.
