Veteran BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj (67-years) passed away in New Delhi last night after suffering a massive cardiac arrest. Sushma Swaraj had a kidney transplant in 2016. She had opted out of contesting Lok Sabha polls earlier this year for health reasons.

Died: 6th August 2019 (aged 67-years) at AIIMS, New Delhi, India.

  • Swaraj will be cremated with full state honours at Lodhi Crematorium, Delhi on 7th August 2019.

  • Sushma Swaraj was born on 14th February 1952 Ambala Cantonment, Punjab.
  • She has served as the External Affairs Minister in the first term of the Narendra Modi led Government.
  • Sushma Swaraj has been elected Member of Parliament (LS& RS) 7 times and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for 3 times.

Education: BA & LLB (Punjab University, Chandigarh).

  • Sushma Swaraj married to Mr Swaraj Kaushal (A criminal lawyer in Supreme Court of India) on 13th July 1975.
  • He has the distinction of being India's youngest ever Advocate General at age 34 and Governor of a state at 37 years of age.
  • He served as the Governor of Mizoram from the year 1990 to the year 1993.
  • Swaraj Kaushal was the Member of Parliament from 1998-2004.

Political Career:


  • Sushma Swaraj began her political career with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the 1970s.

  • She was appointed as the member of Haryana Legislative Assembly from the year 1977 - 82 and 1987 - 90.
  • She was the Cabinet Minister in the Department of Labour and Employment Haryana (from 1977 to 79), & Department of Education, Food & Civil Supplies (from 1987 to 90) at Haryana.
  • Sushma Swaraj was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1990 and remained there until she was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from South Delhi constituency in 1996.
  • Sushma Swaraj was the Union Cabinet Minister of Information & Broadcasting (I&B)in the year 1996. She was the second woman to hold this office, after Indira Gandhi.
  • She had supplementary charge of Ministry of Telecommunications from 19th March to 2nd October 1998.
  • In the 2014 Indian general election, she won the Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh for a second term.
  • Sushma was the Minister of External Affairs from 26th May 2014 to 30th May 2019.
  • She was also the 1st woman Chief Minister of Delhi (5th) from 13th October to 3rd December 1998.
  • Sushma Swaraj was awarded the Best Parliamentarian award in 2004.
  • Swaraj was called India's "best-loved politician" by the US daily Wall Street Journal.
