If she sells 70 pens, she has to sell 175 pencils if there is no profit or loss in the transaction.

From the given question it is clear that there is neither profit nor loss.

Therefore,

Profit earned + loss incurred = 0

On rearranging we get

Profit earned = – Loss incurred

Profit earned by selling 70 pens = 70 × 1 = ₹ 70

Hence, Loss incurred by selling pencils = – ₹ 70 or – 7000 paise.

Loss incurred on each pencil = 40 paise.

So, total number of pencils sold = total loss incurred/ loss on each pencil

= -7000/ -40

= 175 pencils

Profit is the money made when a thing is sold for more than it costs to produce.

Loss: The sum that the seller experiences as a result of selling the item for less than its cost is indicated.
