A Rotameter is a device used to Measure the flow Rate of Fluids. It is a famous device used to measure the volumetric pressure of fluid with its metal float and glass tube. It was invented in 1908 by Karl Kueppers. It is popularly known as the variable area flow meter and is mainly used to measure pressure physically.

Remember that this device is only used to measure flow vertically and not horizontally. Also, this device can not be used to do measurements of high-pressure liquid or heat.

Uses of Rotameter

There will be a glass tube with a metering float between the inlet and outlet of the Rotameter device. When the fluid cross through Inlet, the metering float raise due to pressure. The transparent glass tube makes it easy to note the reading. The structure of the rotameter device does not allow it to fit in a horizontal or inclined position to measure the flow. Ensure that the Inlet will be on the bottom and the outlet should be on top at the time of installment.

  • Rotameter is known as a gravity flow meter, mechanical flow meter, etc.
  • It is helpful when it comes to doing the measurement of liquid or gas flow.
  • Rotameters should be installed so that when fluid enters through the Inlet (base of the tapered tube), it hits the float and pushes upward.
  • It gets stable at a particular point, and that’s the reading of the flow.

Fluid pressure should be enough to move the metering float. Otherwise, no reading will be shown. The fluid’s entry point is small to create an ideal pressure. There are five types of rotameter, and the role of everyone is different.

  • Affordable installation cost
  • No need for power consumption
  • Fluid pressure heat should be less than 40 degrees Celsius.
  • It cannot bear high flow pressure, which is ideal for small flow measurements.
