Merz-price protection is suitable for alternators. The alternator stator is only protected from burning through at least 80% of it by Merz-Price circulating current protection system or differential alternator protection.

Merz Price Protection

  • Differential protection is another name for Merz price protection.
  • The two currents will be the same under normal circumstances, but if a problem develops, there will be a difference. The Merz Price Protection Scheme detects this difference.
  • The damage to the stator is the fault’s most serious consequence for an alternator. To prevent the alternator stator from burning through at least 80% of it, the differential protection of the alternator or Merz price circulating current protection system is utilized.
  • Comparing two currents flowing into and out of the stator coil is the basis of the Merz Price protection mechanism, also known as the differential circulating current protection scheme.
  • There is no way to fix a burned-out or fused-together stator coil, which results in a prolonged outage.

Overcurrent protection:

Overcurrent protection guards against excessive currents that exceed the equipment’s allowable current rating. To provide overcurrent protection for the line, magnetic circuit breakers, fuses, and overcurrent relays are frequently employed.

Earth fault protection:

  • Earth fault protection is designed to safeguard machinery in the event of an insulation failure, such as direct contact between a live conductor and the earth.
  • For earth fault protection, three devices are used: an earth fault relay, an earth leakage circuit breaker, and a ground fault circuit interrupter.
  • The electrical system becomes short-circuited when an earth fault happens, and the short-circuited current flows through the system.

Distance protection:

  • The relay activates and isolates the defective portion if the measured impedance is less than the predetermined value.
  • A non-unit system of protection known as distance protection gauges the impedance between the location of the laid line and the spot where the fault occurs and compares it to a predetermined set value.

Summary:

A Merz-price protection is suitable for – (a) Transformers (b) Alternators (c) Feeders (d) Transmission lines

Alternators are appropriate for Merz-price protection. Merz-Price circulation current protection system or differential alternator protection are the two mechanisms that can prevent the alternator stator from burning through at least 80% of it.
