A man walks on a straight road from his home to a market 2.5 km away with a speed of 5 km/h. Finding the market closed, he instantly turns and walks back home with a speed of 7.5 km/h. If the total time of travel is 40 min the average speed of the man for the whole journey is 5.625 km/hr.
Steps to Calculate the Average Speed of the man for the whole Journey
Step 1: It is given that
Total time of travel = 40 min
Distance between the market and home = 2.5 km
Speed = 5 km/h and 7.5 km/h
Step 2: Now we have to find the average speed
The time taken from home to market is
time = d/V = 2.5/2 = ½ hour = 30 minutes
He takes the remaining time, or 10 minutes, to return at a speed of 7.5 km/h.
(Total trip time is 40 minutes, including the 30 minutes spent at the market; there are 10 minutes left.)
Distance = 7.5 x 10/60 = 1.25 km
The formula is given by,
Average speed = Total distance/ Total time
= (2.5 + 1.25)km/ (40/60) hour
= 45/8
= 5.625 km/hr
Therefore, the average speed of man is 5.625 km/hr
Summary:
A man walks on a straight road from his home to a market 2.5 km away with a speed of 5 km/h. Finding the market closed, he instantly turns and walks back home with a speed of 7.5 km/h. If the total time of travel is 40 min find the average speed of the man for the whole journey.
A man travels at a speed of 5 km/h down a straight road from his home to a market located 2.5 km away. He immediately turns around and walks back home at a speed of 7.5 km/h after discovering the market is closed. The average speed of the man for the entire voyage is 5.625 km/hr if the total travel time is 40 minutes.
