  1. Brayton cycle
  2. Rankine cycle
  3. Dual cycle
  4. Carnot cycle

A gas turbine works on the Brayton cycle. It is a thermodynamic cycle that elucidates the operation of certain heat engines that comprises some gas or air as their working fluid. It is an open-air cycle. In the Brayton cycle, the air is taken from the environment and exhausted with the products of combustion to the environment.

Answer: A gas turbine works on the Brayton cycle.

The Brayton cycle represents the operation of a gas turbine engine. It is named after American Scientist George Brayton who developed it for use in piston engines. The cycle comprises four processes namely:

  • a – b Adiabatic, quasi-static compression in the inlet, and compressor.
  • b – c, Constant pressure fuel combustion.
  • c – d Adiabatic, quasi-static expansion in the turbine and exhaust nozzle.
  • d – a, cool the air at constant pressure back to its initial condition.

Types of Brayton Cycle

There are three types of Brayton cycle. The details on the types of Brayton cycle have been illustrated below:

  • Open Brayton Cycle: The Brayton cycle with internal combustion is based on the open Brayton cycle.
  • Closed Brayton Cycle: It is used in closed-cycle gas turbines and high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
  • Reverse Brayton Cycle: It is also called Brayton Refrigeration Cycle. The cycle that is driven in the reverse direction is called Reverse Brayton Cycle.

Summary:

A gas turbine works on __________.

A gas turbine works on the Brayton cycle. It describes the workings of a constant-pressure heat engine.
