What is Data Interpretation (DI)?

Data Interpretation is a set of knowledge given in different forms utilizing and visualizing the data to make sense out of it. It may present data, the information in the pie chart, graphical form, tabular form, etc. Generally, DI questions are calculative and time-consuming as compared to other types of questions.

In DI questions you need to extract data from visuals and then apply them to the given questions. DI questions may be based on the topics of Arithmetic like profit and loss, average, and percentages.

This is the simplest form of comparing the two quantities. You might have seen this form several times on social media, comparing two things. For example, it may use to compare GDP growth rate of a country, production in a company in different years, books sold in different years/time, etc.

The line graph is of two types:

  1. Single line graph (As shown in the picture above)
  2. Double line graph (Where there are two lines comparing things in a different year)

A line graph generally displays a series of data connected with dots using a straight line. Line graph helps to understand the growth or outcome for different years.

It is the second-most important type of DI asked in bank exams. Bar Graph DI is also known as Bar charts. It generally presents explicit data with rectangular bars. There are two types of the bar graph, horizontal and vertical. There can be two values/bars comparing the commodities/years with others.

For example, the above bar graph shows data of the year 2011 and 2012 where information about different sports is given.

Strategy to solve DI Questions

1. Read the questions carefully: Unlike other topics, it is important to read the question and instructions associated with it. Try to find the concept on which the DI is based. Like it may be calculative, it may be based on percentage, average, or even profit and loss statements. The first step is to find the concept.

2. Examine the data given in the questions: The next step is the analyze the data given in the questions whether tabular DI, pie chart, mixed or other. Once you analyze the data or information carefully, you will be able to tackle questions based on that particular DI very easily.

3. Always make Notes: While practicing for the DI questions, it is important to make notes as you may find several tricks while solving their questions. Try to note down your own method of solving questions so that you can revise them at the time of the exam.

4. Be careful with the values: Be very wise while dealing with the values. As in bank examinations especially in the mains exams, DI questions are quite tricky. Sometimes it is difficult to find the exact values. So learn to find the approximate values also.

5. Learn the shortcut: You will not have the luxury to solve the questions according to your convenience as the time would be limited. You will have to learn shortcuts and ways to compute them. This will help you save time and solve questions within seconds.
