Vidit Garg from Haryana is a miracle student. He has made it to the coveted IIM-A despite scoring 89.67 percentile in the CAT ExamAnd this despite him being a General Category Student. This article aims to throw some light on this curious case the admission criteria in the background. This student was not unique in the sense that doctors with 90 percentile also received calls from IIM-A. However, there are no final admissions confirmed by IIM A. Vidit Garg's is the only case covered for the sheer lack of profiles of the said doctors and other non-engineers. The lowering of weightage of CAT score from 35% to 28% would have been of some help.

Besides the factors of diversity and of Good Fortune, his success is said to have come from the following:

  • Preparation for 10 hours everyday 3 weeks before the interview
  • Simulation of interview questions with possible mock PIs
  • Self-Analysis after developing answers to 50 possible questions

The following is said to have come from the horse's mouth:

'I could not believe it, yes, my interview did go well and i had given myself 50% of a chance but to actually get admitted is something else'

It can be now said that IIMs are giving more importance to profile diversity. At least that is what this special incident leads us to conclude. This is good news for non-engineers. Engineers, however, have to be prepared for a stiffer challenge. They might have to focus on their profiles as well as their CAT score.
