  • The year 2018 marked the 75th anniversary of the formation of Azad Hind Government, formed by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
  • On this occasion, PM Modi hoisted the national flag at the red fort to observe and venerate the anniversary.
  • The Azad Hind government was an Indian provisional government established in Singapore in 1943. It had the backing of Hitter’s Germany and her allies.
  • An Indian revolutionary by the name of Rash Behari Bose who had escaped from India and had been living in Japan set up a league with the support of the Indians living in South East Asia by the name of the Indian independence league.
  • It so happened when during the second world war, the Japanese defeated the British, the same league formed the INA or the Azad Hind Fauz from the Indian Prisoners of War with the goal of liberating India from Colonial domination.
  • The formation and the existence of the INA played the role of a catalyst in the Indian freedom struggle and imparted more legitimacy to the independence struggle.
  • INA saw its first collapse in the first year of its formation itself, after differences between the INA leadership and the Japanese military over its role in Japan’s war in Asia.
  • The Army was revived thereafter in 1943 under the leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose after he arrived in South East Asia.
  • Under his leadership, INA capitalized on the POWs and civilian volunteers. This batch of the INA fought with the Japanese army against the colonial power in Burma, Imphal, and Kohima.
  • Azad Hind government was actively involved in nation-building and had even started its own bank, currency, civil code and stamps.
  • Experts opine that Bose had laid the foundation for Equal Opportunity for women in Armed forces by the formation of Rani Jhansi Regiment.
  • PM while speaking talked about the fact that the government is carrying forward this legacy in true means and reiterated that women will be given equal opportunity for permanent commission in armed forces.
